Lázaro Mangubat

Gabriel Lázaro de Mangubat, also known as Capitán Lázaro Mangubat,[2] was a Gobernadorcillo, a Filipino governor, from the 17th-century.[1]

In 1630 Lázaro the Mangubat established the first organised settlement in the northern part of Bantayan in sitio Mancilang, where Madridejos is now located. He was the founder of Lawis (meaning point to the sea).[3] It was also him who proclaimed it a visita (beginnings of a parish) of the town of Bantayan.[4]

Lázaro built a kota and church whose ruined walls and post from the ravages of wars and Moro raids can still be seen in the northernmost part of the town.[5] The people of Madridejos honoured its founder by naming one of the streets Lazaro Mangubat Street. [6]
