Robert M. La Follette High School is a public school located in Madison, Wisconsin, on the city's South East Side with its attendance boundaries including parts of the City of Madison, City of Fitchburg, Town of Blooming Grove, and Town of Burke, teaching students in grades 9-12. It is a part of the Madison Metropolitan School District. One of five Madison public high schools, it is commonly known as "La Follette". The school is named after former lawmaker and 1924 presidential candidate Robert M. La Follette, Sr..

La Follette is one of a small number of schools in the state using the block system. Each class is an hour and a half, with four classes per day. Most classes are completed in one semester. A new set of four classes begins in the spring semester for a total of eight classes per year per student. Students seem to prefer the four block schedule to traditional high school schedules because they feel the day goes by faster and homework is more manageable. It also gives teachers more time with students.

On September 28, 2010, the school was visited by President Barack Obama during an unannounced stop.[2]

Arboretum

La Follette High School has one of the few on-grounds arboretums in the state. It was designed to have three ecosystems, including prairie, woodland, and pond.

Extra-curricular activities

The Science Olympiad Team at La Follette High School participates in statewide competitions (stub)

The La Follette Quiz Bowl team, founded in 1978, won the Wisconsin State Tournament twice, in both the Fall and Spring. The team was eligible for Nationals in Chicago (stub, need more info)

In April 2012, Kasey Gallagher-Schmitz was elected to become the Wisconsin HOSA State President. He was the second student from La Follette to serve on the state's Executive Council, and the first president from La Follette High School.

Athletics

La Follette athletics include baseball, fast-pitch softball, track and field, hockey, swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics, cheerleading, poms, cross country, football, soccer, volleyball, golf, and tennis.

Club sports at La Follette include lacrosse and rugby.

2002 Track and Field State Champions

In 2002, the La Follette Boys Track and Field Team scored 81.5 points, which remains the most points ever scored by any boys team, in any division, at the WIAA state meet (eclipsing Milwaukee South's record of 81 in 1986). Composed of Elliot Enright, Joe Conway, Jontae Flowers, Lewis Stotts, Nathan Brown, Chris Cox, Jon Blomker, and coached by Mike Brown, the Lancers won 6 individual-event state championship awards, and 3 additional podium finishes.[3]

2006 and 2007 Cross Country State Champions.

Composed of Andy Buchanan, Garrett Eklof, Hayden Lamb, Alex Brill, John Prusynski, Trevor Scharnke and Brently Bohn, the Lancer Distance Crew set the state record for largest margin of victory in 2007. The team was, and still is, led by Head Coach Brady Nichols.

Summit Credit Union

In the winter of 2010-2011, a branch of Summit Credit Union was opened within La Follette High School. The branch is staffed by interns from the La Follette career internship class and is open only during the lunch hour.
