He worked for Jim Crockett Promotions and did guest shots with Vince McMahon in the World Wrestling Federation rising to midcard in both promotions before leaving to join Nelson Royal's Atlantic Coast Wrestling as L.A. Stephens. He was partners with Doug Somers and was making a bid for the ACW tag titles when the promotion folded. He also worked in the booking office with Grizzly Smith and Colt Steel.

After taking some time to pursue a coaching career and working the Independent circuit, he booked a spot on David Baucom's NWA Mid Atlantic troop and toured the world during the early 2000s. While he was teaming with Big Bubba Bane, they defeated the Rock 'N Roll Express team of Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship.[1]
