Legislative districts of Agusan del Sur

This article is part of a series on the
politics and government of
the Philippines

The Legislative districts of Agusan del Sur, namely the first and second districts, are the current representations of the province of Agusan del Sur in the Philippine House of Representatives.

The Department of Mindanao and Sulu, of which Agusan became a special province in 1914, was first given representation in the 4th Philippine Legislature by virtue of the Jones Law enacted by the United States Congress on August 29, 1916. However, the Department's five delegates were appointed by the Governor-General rather than elected by popular vote. Even with the abolition of the Department of Mindanao and Sulu as an autonomous governing structure on February 5, 1920 by virtue of Act No. 2878, the individual provinces within it did not receive separate elected representations. Agusan only began electing its own representative in 1935 after Act No. 4203, enacted on July 23, 1935, granted each province within the Department an elected representative. Areas now under the jurisdiction of Agusan del Sur were represented as part of the lone district of Agusan until 1969, after a plebiscite held on November 14, 1967 approved the old province's division into Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur by virtue of Republic Act No. 4979 enacted on June 17, 1967.

The province was represented in the Interim Batasang Pambansa as part of Region X from 1978 to 1984, and elected one representative to the Regular Batasang Pambansa. Agusan del Sur retained its lone congressional district under the new Constitution which took effect on February 7, 1987, and elected its member to the restored House of Representatives starting that same year.

The approval of Republic Act No. 9508 on October 20, 2008 divided the province into two districts, which elected their own representatives starting in the 2010 elections.
