Awake is an American television police procedural fantasy drama that originally aired on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) for one season from March 1 to May 24, 2012.[1] The series aired for thirteen episodes,[1] and focuses on Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs), a detective living in two separate realities after a car accident. In one reality, in which he wears a green wrist band, his wife Hannah Britten (Laura Allen) was killed in the crash, and in another reality, in which he wears a red wrist band, his son Rex Britten (Dylan Minnette) was the one killed. Michael does not know which reality is real. He sees two separate therapists: Dr. Jonathan Lee (BD Wong) in the "red reality", and Dr. Judith Evans (Cherry Jones) in the "green reality".[2]

In February 2011, Isaacs obtained the role of Michael in the series.[3] A month later, Minnette was cast as Rex, while Wilmer Valderrama, Steve Harris, Wong, and Allen also garnered roles, being cast as Efrem Vega, Michael's detective partner in the "red reality", Isaiah "Bird" Freeman, Michael's detective partner in the "green reality", Lee, Evans, and Hannah, respectively.[4] Producers of the show initially approached Michaela McManus to play Hannah, but later, Allen was cast instead, while McManus obtained the role of Tara, Rex's tennis coach, which Allen had originally auditioned to play.[5] The main cast of Awake were praised by critics, particularly Isaacs' performance.[6][7][8]

Guest stars were also a staple of Awake. The first episode that featured guest stars was "The Little Guy", the show's second episode, which garnered ten guest appearances. Several guest stars have been featured as recurring characters on the series, including Laura Innes, Kevin Weisman, and Mark Harelik. Innes has made the most appearances, guest starring nine times. Weisman appeared four times on the program, while Harelik starred five times; Daniela Bobadilla made over five appearances on the show. Criticism about guest stars came from critics, however. Awake's eighth episode, "Nightswimming", was critically panned due to the over-detailed storyline of the guest stars and guest characters.[9][10] Despite this, the show's recurring guest character, Dr. Banks (Chris McGarry), was well received by The A.V. Club editor Zack Handlen, who thought that he "[was] becoming [his] favorite secondary character on the show".[11]
