The Leftovers is an American television drama series created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta airing on HBO. It is based on Perrotta's novel of the same name.[1] The series stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Ann Dowd and Carrie Coon. It premiered on HBO on June 29, 2014.[2] The series was renewed for a second season on August 13, 2014, which premiered on October 4, 2015; and concluded December 6, 2015.[3][4][5]
On December 10, 2015, The Leftovers was renewed for a third and final season; consisting of eight episodes.[6][7] As of December 6, 2015, 20 episodes of The Leftovers have aired, concluding the second season.

Kevin Garvey is a police chief in Mapleton, New York, working to keep order after the mysterious Sudden Departure, an unexplained event that occurred three years prior which saw the disappearance of many of the town's citizens. His wife, Laurie, has left him to join the Guilty Remnant (GR), an organization with unknown motives and members dressed in all-white who communicate by writing notes as they have taken a vow of silence. His son, Tom, has also left him to become a follower of Holy Wayne, a messianic figure. Kevin's daughter, Jill, lives with him and is in high school, but the erosion of her family life leads her to act out. Kevin is in conflict with Mayor Lucy Warburton about her plan for a parade to honor the victims of the Sudden Departure. His prediction that the GR will hold a protest during the parade that will result in violence with the angered townspeople, unfortunately comes true. Afterward, Kevin begs Laurie to return home with him, but she refuses to speak to him. When an ATFEC (the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives, and Cults; formerly the ATF) team attacks Holy Wayne's hideout, Tommy kills somebody for the first time in order to protect Christine's life. Meg has been living at the GR residence for weeks and becomes frustrated at her apparent lack of progress into their ranks. Following his night shooting dogs with Dean, Kevin's stability is questioned by his deputies and Lucy. He later visits his institutionalized father when he himself feels his sanity unraveling. Tommy's guilt is exacerbated by his growing animosity towards Wayne. Jill, Aimee and the twins spend the day following Nora after Jill spots a pistol in Nora's purse. | |||||||

Reverend Matt Jamison is steadfast in his belief that the Departed have all been less than Heroes, despite the abuse this earns him from the public. Matt faces foreclosure on his church. Following an apparent sign from God, he wins enough money at the casino to buy it back. Encountering an unknown assailant throwing rocks at members of the Guilty Remnant, Matt tries to help, only to be hit by a rock himself, and knocked unconscious. Upon waking he learns he has missed the foreclosure deadline by two days; it is revealed that the Guilty Remnant have bought his church. | |||||||

Christmas comes to Mapleton but not without its problems. Kevin is tasked with finding the baby Jesus from the town's nativity scene, which was stolen by his own daughter Jill, unbeknownst to him. Eventually the twins leave the baby Jesus on Kevin's doorstep, but another doll is placed in the nativity scene before Kevin can return the doll. Tom takes the pregnant Christine to a hospital. On the night of the Christmas ball, GR members sneak into Mapleton residents' homes and remove pictures of the departed. | |||||||

Gladys, a devout member of the Guilty Remnant, is brutally stoned to death. As the rest of the GR goes on lockdown, Patti takes Laurie to a diner and tests her faith. As Kevin investigates Gladys' murder, he resists pressure to hand the case over to the ATFEC whose remit apparently has expanded in the wake of the Sudden Departure. While calling them to cancel a Federal inquiry, he learns that he has the option to let the government simply exterminate Patti's chapter of the GR. Kevin and Nora have an interaction in the Mapleton courthouse. Nora attends a departure related conference in New York City as a panelist and discovers someone is impersonating her on her panel. Unable to officially attend, she wanders the hotel, spending time at a party where she kisses a departure replica, then encountering Holy Wayne, who hugs her, seemingly purging her anxieties. After an encounter with the girl and her caretaker, Tom begins to question his devotion to Wayne, who seems to be growing increasingly unglued. Patti arranges for a major move by the GR on Memorial Day. Kevin invites Nora over for dinner with Jill and Aimee. Jill and Aimee have a falling out, and Aimee moves out of the Garvey residence. Jill later shows up at the GR's house. Kevin and Dean attempt to deal with Patti, whom they kidnapped the night before. In Patti's absence, Laurie takes charge of the Memorial Day plan. Patti speaks candidly to Kevin about the GR and their motives, and tries to persuade Dean, then Kevin, to kill her. A flashback recounts Mapleton residents' experiences during the days leading up to the Departure. A surprise "Mapleton Person of the Year" victory party is thrown for Kevin's father. Laurie is revealed to be a psychiatrist, and Patti her patient, who senses an upcoming apocalyptic event. Tom has a violent confrontation with his biological father; Kevin then attacks the man. Jill prepares for a science fair. Nora spends time with her family and interviews for a job working for a mayoral candidate. Kevin pursues a deer that is wreaking havoc around Mapleton. He chases it to a house where it flees and is hit by a car. The driver is an attractive woman who invites him to her hotel room. During the Departure, Kevin is having sex with the woman when she disappears; Nora snaps at her family right before they disappear; Jill and Tommy form a circuit at the science fair when one child in the circle disappears; Laurie has an ultrasound and witnesses the disappearance of the fetus. | |||||||

Kevin seeks Matt's help in disposing of the evidence from the previous night's events. Meanwhile, The Guilty Remnant places the life-like burial dolls of the Departed townspeople where they disappeared causing a riot back home. Tommy finds his way back home after Christine leaves him with the baby. Wayne dies after granting a mysterious wish to Kevin. Kevin and Matt return home to find a riot has begun of the guilty remnant movement. They find a beaten up Meg who refuses to say anything except write that they made everyone remember. Kevin finds that the Guilty Remnant's houses have been set on fire. Laurie who is pulled out tells Kevin that Jill is still there. Kevin saves Jill from the flames. Tommy arrives back in Mapleton with the baby and finds Laurie. Nora believes that it is best for her to leave town she writes a letter to Kevin and goes to place it on his doorstep but finds Christine's baby there. Laurie and Tommy leave town together, while Kevin and Jill arrive back at the house to find Nora with the baby in her arms. |

Prologue: a pregnant cave woman becomes the sole survivor of her clan after an earthquake and rockfall, she then goes into labour and gives birth. A short time later while distracted hunting for food, a snake threatens the baby and the mother protects it, but at the cost of a fatal bite. The mother continues on for a short while but succumbs to the snake's venom and collapses and dies by the side of a small watering hole. Another woman then claims the orphan. Present day: Jarden, Texas, has become known as Miracle, where zero departures took place. The Murphys, John, Erika, Michael, and Evie, are town staples. John is a fireman, Erika is a doctor. However, not all is as it seems with the enigmatic family. John brutally punishes those who believe the town to be special; Erika is partially deaf; and Evie suffers from epilepsy. The Murphys receive new neighbors in Kevin, Nora, Jill, and Lily. That night, three local girls vanish into thin air, one of them being Evie. | |||||||

Back in Mapleton, Kevin is in the midst of a crisis of conscience over his role in Patti Levin's death. He returns to the shallow grave in the woods and unearths the body. He purposely speeds past a police car and is pulled over and taken in for questioning. He is quickly released after being advised to admit that Patti's death was suicide by the investigating officer. Jill meets with Tom at a diner and attempts to woo him back to the rest of the family, to no avail. After a talk with his recently released father, Kevin proposes to Nora and Jill that they relocate. Nora sells her house to a group from MIT interested in the Departure, and she uses the money to purchase an auctioned house in Jarden, Texas. Shortly after their arrival, Kevin begins to have visions of Patti. That night he awakens at the bottom of a drained lake, with a cinder block tied to his ankle: just a few feet away from where the three girls disappeared. | |||||||

Tom has infiltrated the Guilty Remnant, and is posing as one to secretly identify sceptics and bring them to the support group his mother has founded. Susan, the latest recruit, is helped by Laurie to readjust back into living with her family. Laurie is all consumed with her tell-all book she's writing about her experience in the GR. After being late on their rent, the landlord evicts Laurie and Tom; with all of their things tossed onto the street, except for Laurie's computer, which holds the final draft of her manuscript. After asking nicely to no avail, that night Laurie invades the landlord's home and retrieves the stolen laptop. As she makes her escape, high on adrenaline, she purposely rams her car into two GR members standing in her path. Elsewhere, Tom is caught after having tried to extract another GR member. He's sexually assaulted and nearly killed by Meg. Susan struggles to adjust back to her home life and kills herself and her family. Laurie hears of this news just as she's about to meet with a potential publisher for her book. During the proposal meeting the publisher recalls, in great detail, the events that take place in her book driving her to attack him. After Tom bails her out of jail, she laments that extracted GR members need meaning in their life. Later, at a support GR meeting, Tom tells of Holy Wayne, and that he now possesses his "gift" of healing. | |||||||

Back in present day Jarden, Nora awakens to an earthquake the morning after the girls' disappearance, to find Kevin missing. Fearing the worst, she experiences a major meltdown, before Kevin turns up back at the house. He explains waking up at the bottom of a lake, but withholds any other details. They both agree that Kevin should remain silent concerning his proximity to the girls, in fear of suspicious minds. He joins the search party at the lake, with the ulterior motive of finding his phone, which he lost in the night's confusion. After finding it, he's met by a troubled John, who offers to drive him home, but instead makes him an unwitting partner in crime. He drives to the motel where Isaac, the man who predicted John's unfortunate fate, is staying. John attacks Isaac with a baseball bat, while Kevin works to restrain his rage. Issac shoots John in self defense, after which Kevin drives John to Erika's clinic for medical care. Meanwhile, Nora visits Matt for reassurance that Jarden is all it's chalked up to be. He recounts the night he and Mary first arrived, and her miraculous recovery and subsequent relapse. At the conclusion of the day, Nora insists on handcuffing herself to Kevin while they sleep. The episode closes with Michael removing the 'verified' orange sticker from his family's home, referred to in the episode's title. | |||||||

Reverend Matt Jamison has been duplicating everyday as if it were the one Mary awoke on, to no avail. Frustrated, he takes Mary to Austin, TX to get an MRI done. While there, the doctors reveal she's pregnant. Allegations of sexual misconduct are insinuated by the doctor, but Matt insists he and Mary made love the night of her recovery. While on their way back to Jarden, they come upon a man, and his young son, with car trouble. When Matt stops to assist, the stranger assaults him and steals both of their wristbands, allowing access to the exclusive town. Mary seemingly awakens for an instant, and proclaims that if she doesn't get back to Jarden, the baby will die. Matt wheels her all the way to the border checkpoint. After being refused entry, John Murphy agrees to sponsor them, on one condition; Matt must admit that Mary's pregnancy is not miraculous in nature. He does, but John changes his mind when Matt questions why he has such anger towards the town. Later, Nora and Kevin attempt to sneak them in, by way of their car's trunk. While driving they come upon an accident, caused by a herd of goats. The thief of the forlorn couples wristbands lay dead, with the son quivering near by. After sending Mary ahead with Kevin and Nora, Matt takes the boy to John. He tells John to take care of him; and that he will not enter Jarden again until he can prove his truth. Matt heads into the encampment, and displays an act of endearment. | |||||||

A scientist comes to Jarden in search of answers concerning Nora, and her proximity to the recently departed girls. Nora doesn't react well. After refusing the man, she receives a call from one of his colleagues, claiming that they have answers concerning "Lenses". A "Lens" is someone the DSD (Department of Sudden Departures) has classified as being a risk for those around them departing. Nora is flabbergasted after learning that their theory is based in mystical and religious beliefs. Meanwhile, during a fundraiser for the departed, Erika treats everyone in attendance to a dose of her frank opinion. Later, Nora and Erika bond and quarrel over their losses. Kevin awakens to find Nora gone. Patti tells him she's left, with Mary and Lily. Jill shows immediate disdain for her dad's behavior, and sees history repeating itself. Michael tells Kevin that his grandfather Virgil, whom Kevin has previously had dealings with, knows of a way to rid himself of Patti. Virgil explains that in order to "battle" off Patti, he must meet her in death. This scares Kevin away. He gets a call from the State Troopers office saying that Laurie is at the city's edge. He goes to meet with her. She's on a desperate mission to find a missing Tom. Kevin becomes unhinged and scares her away. After an intimate quarrel with Jill, Kevin goes to the motel where Laurie's staying, and divulges his plight. Laurie diagnoses him as psychotic, like his father. Kevin asks that Laurie help him on his journey to recovery, and they both return to his home in Jarden. When they arrive, Kevin receives a call from Nora. He tells her he has a way to fix his problem, but must know if she would believe he's fixed. She says yes. He storms off the property, leaving a flustered Jill and Laurie behind. He goes to Virgil, and submits himself. Virgil mixes him an elixir of poison, with a shot of epinephrine standing by to revive him. A desperate Patti appears, attempting to dissuade Kevin. He drinks the potion, and succumbs to a heart attack. Virgil empties the syringe, and then commits suicide. Michael enters and drags Kevin off. | |||||||

Kevin is plunged into the realm of the undead; a hotel full of people stuck between life and death. In this world Kevin is an international assassin, charged with assassinating presidential nominee Patti Levin. Virgil is the concierge of the hotel. He guides Kevin through this newfound maze of a reality, before drinking the water and becoming completely oblivious as to whom Kevin is. Meanwhile, Kevin saves a little girl from drowning in the pool, then discovers that Mary is staying at the hotel. He's tortured by Levin's security team, led by Gladys, in order to confirm intention and identity. He passes after admitting some truths and attends a meeting with Patti. Just as he's about to kill her, the woman claims that she's a decoy, that the real Levin had paid her off. Kevin shoots her anyway, but the fact turned out to be true. He realizes that the little girl from the pool is really Levin. Having received instructions from his father, Kevin takes Patti to a water well back in Jarden, and begrudgingly tosses her down. An aged and battered Patti calls out from the depths of the well. Kevin climbs and falls down. Patti bares her sorrow, then Kevin drowns her. He is returned to the edge of the wood of Jarden, where Michael is waiting. | |||||||

In flashbacks, Meg's mother dies on the day before the great departure, setting off a chain of emotional ramifications, leading to her current state of mind. She and her fiance journey to Jarden, in search of answers from Isaac, but she doesn't like what she hears. While there she bumps into Evie. Tom grows tired of his "holy" ruse and reaches out to Meg after hitting a low. In present day, Meg and Tom set out, back to Jarden. Meg is on a self-proclaimed mission of a lifetime. After ordering to have a man who stumbled onto the GR base near Jarden stoned, Meg visits the encampment and encounters Matt. He's leery of her intentions. She states that he and his people have been waiting for her. Curious as to why the man had to be stoned to death, Tom investigates the barn the man was found prying near. There he finds Evie and her two missing friends, holed up in an airstream travel trailer. | |||||||

Kevin recovers from death, then returns home to an enraged John, having had identified his handprint. Kevin explains that Evie faked her departure, then John shoots him. He's plunged back into the land of the non-living, where he is told by a familiar face that he must sing karaoke to get back home, which he hesitantly does. After another earthquake, Mary recovers, and Nora takes her to Matt at the encampment. Meanwhile, Meg and Evie initiate their plan and the Guilty Remnant infiltrate Jarden, leading way to chaos and destruction by the outsiders. In need of aid, Kevin makes his way through the distraught town, to Erika's clinic, where he encounters John a second time. The two men reflect on their similar plights, and head for home. When Kevin opens the front door Jill, Laurie, Matt, Mary, Nora, Tom and Lily are all present, awaiting his return. |
