List of Vermont railroads

The state of Vermont owns around 305 miles (491 km) of the 578 miles (930 km) of track within the state. It leases it to Vermont Rail Systems, Green Mountain Railroad, and Washington County Railroad. Genesee & Wyoming own the track. The state funds capital improvements; Vermont Rail Systems funds maintenance and runs freight over them.^[1]

Common freight carriers

Two companies run nearly all trains in Vermont: Genessee & Wyoming, which operates in Vermont as the New England Central Railroad and the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad. The second is the Vermont Rail.^[1]

Passenger carriers

Amtrak (AMTK). In 2016, the state paid $8 million annually to Amtrak, to subsidize the two passenger routes through the state.^[1]
