Lower Main River, New Brunswick
Main River is a Canadian rural community located in Kent County, New Brunswick.
It is considered an unincorporated hamlet within the Local Service District of Weldford Parish and is situated on the south bank of the Richibucto River approximately 4.5 km (2.8 mi) northwest of the community of West Branch and 6 km (3.7 mi) west (upstream) from the community of Mundleville. A bridge crosses the Richibucto River at the intersection of Route 510 and Indian House Road to connect with the Elsipogtog First Nation.
History
A history of Canada's postal service indicates there was a post office established in "Main River" from 1875-1877 and then from 1883-1956. In 1898 Main River was a farming and lumbering settlement with 1 post office, 1 church and a population of about 200. The community name of "Main River" is sometimes used to indicate the main section of the Richibucto River however, a history of Botsford Parish in neighbouring Westmorland County references the genealogical sketches of 68 families in this area of Kent County which indicates that a David Main with his two sons immigrated to New Brunswick in 1821 and settled near Rexton and the place where they operated a cedar mill along the Richibucto River became known as Main River.
