Elizabeth Mae "Lzzy" Hale[1] (born October 10, 1983)[2] is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She is best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the American hard rock band Halestorm, which she co-founded in 1997.

Career

Hale has been actively writing and performing original music since 1997. Hale started learning piano at the age of 5; she later progressed to a guitar at age 16 with her brother Arejay learning how to play drums. The teen siblings released an EP titled Don't Mess With the Time Man in 1999, marking Hale's first appearance as a recording artist and lead vocalist. She has since enjoyed significant success as not only Halestorm's lead singer, but also with guest appearances alongside artists such as Shinedown, Black Stone Cherry, Seether, Adrenaline Mob and Stone Sour.[3][4]

In the December 2009 issue of Revolver magazine, Hale appeared on the cover alongside Landmine Marathon vocalist Grace Perry as one of the "Hottest Chicks in Metal".[5] For most years since, Hale has been listed as one of the magazine's "Hottest" either in the magazine and/or in its Hottest Chicks calendar. For the magazine's February/March 2015 issue, Hale appeared alone on the cover for both a feature article and once more as one of Revolver's "25 hottest chicks in hard rock and metal".[6]

Hale has also written the advice column "Ask Lzzy" for Revolver.[7]

On July 21, 2010 she appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with Halestorm, performing "Familiar Taste of Poison".[8][9] In 2012, on the Carnival of Madness tour, she performed the Halestorm song "Break in" with Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee.[10] Also, on the Alter Bridge Fortress tour, she performed "Watch Over You" with Myles Kennedy on select dates.

Hale lent her vocals to a reworked version of the Shinedown song "Shed Some Light" from the 2005 album Us and Them. Hale and Shinedown's Brent Smith performed the song live on one occasion. She also sang on Shinedown song "Breaking Inside". On September 5, 2007, Halestorm appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno[4] as part of the "Jaywalking" segment. On July 21, 2010 the band appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, performing "Familiar Taste of Poison".[8][11]

Hale was featured on Device's cover song "Close My Eyes Forever" with singer David Draiman on Device, released on April 9, 2013.

Hale is also featured on Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Letters From the Labyrinth album track "Forget About the Blame".[12]

Halestorm was the last band to share the stage with Ronnie James Dio for his final performance on August 29, 2009, as they opened for Heaven And Hell at Atlantic City's House Of Blues.[13][14] Hale is one of many artists to feature on the Dio tribute album, Ronnie James Dio This Is Your Life, released March 25, 2014. Along with the rest of Halestorm she recorded track 5 of the album, "Straight Through the Heart".

In 2014, she was featured in the title track of violinist Lindsey Stirling's album, Shatter Me. [15]

Also in 2014, Hale performed with Eric Church at both the CMA Music Festival[16] and for a duet of Church's song "That's Damn Rock & Roll" at the CMT Music Awards.[17]

The Gibson Guitar Corporation announced the release of a Lzzy Hale Signature Gibson Guitar in September 2014. It is manufactured by Gibson USA and closely matches the white Explorer Gibson made for her in 2012. The production model doesn't have a bound headstock, has only a one layer binding on the neck, and the knobs are standard gold speed knobs. It comes with Classic 57/Classic 57 Plus pickups and locking gold hardware.

In September 2016, Hale sang vocals as the role of Faythe in a rerecorded and shortened version of Dream Theater's "Our New World". This version was released as a single and on the Dream Theater YouTube channel.[18]

Personal life

On October 11, 2014, Hale came out as bisexual on her personal Twitter account.[19] On October 30, 2015, it was confirmed that she has been in an on-and-off relationship with fellow guitarist Joe Hottinger.[20]

In April 2016, Hale expressed her support for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 United States presidential election.[21]
