In 1940 the US Army ordered 700 Mack 4 x 4 truck tractors, mainly intended for ponton-carrying semi-trailers. The design was a militarised civil traffic type, partly redesigned to make it 4WD. Like the traffic type it was a Cab Over Engine (COE)-type. In 1941 there were 694 truck tractors delivered. The remainder were delivered in 1942.
In the delivery of the 692 vehicles there were Ponton tractors NJU-1, 8 NJU-2. The latest model was designed to tow topographical trailers. In November 1941 a portion of the Ponton tractors were delivered to the British army in Egypt, where they bore WD H-numbers.
Autocar built an equivalent that was standardised by the US Army. Some NJU-1's went in post war French army service.[2]
