Marmonte League

The Marmonte League is a high-school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County and the far western edge of Los Angeles County, California.^[1] The Marmonte League is part of the CIF Southern Section.

Schools

Following the 2014 re-leaguing, the league (for most varsity sports) consists of:

Agoura High School (joined in 1990) ^[2]^[3]
Calabasas High School (joined in 1998)^[4]

Oaks Christian High School (football in 2010, all other sports 2014/2015)
Thousand Oaks High School
Westlake High School

These schools (along with Oak Park HS and Adolfo Camarillo HS) went on to form the Coastal Canyon League:

Previously these schools had been part of the Marmonte League:

before they joined the Pacific View League on its formation.

St. Bonaventure High School joined in 2010 for football only

Releaguing 2014

Plans to revamp the entire northern area of the CIF Southern Section, which included the Marmonte League, were in place for 2014. Those plans were quashed when Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure challenged the plan that would have them move out of the area leagues into a parochial league. In March 2013, the two schools each won their appeal, forcing them to remain in local leagues. In April 2014, a new plan was approved, which will effectively add Adolfo Camarillo High School and Oak Park High School to the league, but will split the Marmonte League into two leagues, one of which will retain the Marmonte League name (though it had not been announced which one).^[6] The above list is the result of the change. The newly created league became the Coastal Canyon League, with St. Bonaventure moving to the new Tri-County Athletic Association.

Banning of Derrick Brown

In 2011 CIF and the Marmonte League decided to deny a Derrick "Deejay" Brown a transfer request thereby preventing him from playing basketball after Thousand Oaks High basketball coach Richard Endres decided to become Brown's guardian.^[7] Brown was the victim of domestic violence in 2009, when his stepfather attempted to kill both Brown and his mother by stabbing them in the face.

At the hearing to determine Brown's eligibility, Marmonte league principals barred Endres from speaking or arguing on behalf of Brown. "They don't like it that he's living with me", said Endres, regarding Marmonte principals.^[8] The decision to ban the teen from playing is widely disagreed upon by the community.

Forced Forfeit

On January 5, 2012, the Marmonte League ruled that Westlake's varsity victory over Agoura was invalid due to the fact that Westlake's junior varsity coach, John Elliot, sat on the varsity bench after having been ejected in the preceding junior varsity game. The ruling came despite the fact that game referees approved Elliot's presence on the bench.^[9]

Westlake followed protocol, obtained necessary approval from game officials, and were forced to forfeit as a result.
