Mary Geaney (born April 6, 1954) is a former Irish sportswoman. In camogie she captained Cork to victory in the All Ireland championship of 1982[1] and won three All Ireland medals. In hockey she played 61 times for Ireland and won an inter-continental cup medal.

Family background

Her father Con, a member of Firies club, won an All Ireland senior championship medal with Kerry in 1932. Her brother Dave, a member of Castleisland Desmonds captained the Kerry minors in 1958 and won an All Ireland championship medal with Kerry in 1959. She attended Ursuline convent school in Cork.

Camogie

She won Ashbourne Cup medals with UCC and four Cork county championship medals with Éire Óg, playing at full forward as they won in their first year after being promoted in 1977. She made her debut with the Cork junior team that year and made her senior debut in 1978, scoring for Cork in their All Ireland semi-final victory over Clare and scoring three goals in the All Ireland final where she won her first medal in the All Ireland final against Dublin.

Scoring achievements include a goal in the 1980 replay win over Limerick, two goals for Cork in the drawn All Ireland final with Kilkenny, a year in which Cork lost the replay, and a point in 1983 when she won her third All Ireland medal. She retired in 1988, having contested two more All Ireland finals and scored a goal in both the 1987 and 1988 finals.[2] She won National League medals in 1984 and 1986.

Hockey

She played school interprovincial with Ursuline and senior inter-provincial with Old Ursuline.[3][4] After an outstanding series of perofmrances in the inter-provincial series, she won the first of 61 caps in goal for Ireland against Englalnd in March 1975[5] and played on the Irish team that won the inter-continental cup in Kuala Lumpur in 1983 and the 1-0 victory over England when they were world champions in 1976 and 2-1 victory in Cambridge in 1977.[6]

Other sports

She played Gaelic football for Kerry, played squash and badminton for Munster, and played Senior Cup golf for Killarney[7] and inter-provincial golf for Munster.[8] She lives in Castleisland, County Kerry.

Awards

She won the Jury's Munster sports star award for camogie in 1980 and for hockey in 1983. She also won a Kerry camogie player of the year award in 1972.
