Melvin J. Showers is an American journalist and news presenter. He is best known for his work at WKRG-TV in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, where he has served as a member of its team since 1969, and as lead news anchor since 1980.

Life and career

Showers was born on the north side of Mobile, Alabama. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served as a Military Intelligence Analyst in the Far East, Middle East, and other territories.

He joined the news team at local station WKRG-TV in 1969, where he first worked as a reporter covering the police, the school board, and local government. He was, according to the Lagniappe, often the first individual on the scene of large news stories.[1] By 1980, he transitioned into the station's lead anchor chair, a position he has continued to hold.[2]

Personal life

Showers was married to Linda Reed Showers from 1968 until her death in 2012.[3]

Education

Awards and recognition

Showers was inducted into Alabama’s Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015.[2]
