Michael Tubbs is an American politician who is a City Councilmember and the Mayor-elect of Stockton, California.[1]

Personal life

Born and raised in Stockton, Tubbs attended Hamilton Middle School and graduated with the International Baccalaureate diploma from Franklin High School. He earned a full ride scholarship to Stanford University and graduated with a master's degree in Policy, Leadership and Organization Studies, a bachelor's degree with honors, as a Truman Scholar and as the recipient of the highest university award, the Dinkelspiel. During his time at Stanford, he also served as President of the school's NAACP.[2]

Tubbs was arrested for driving under the influence in Stockton on October 18, 2014 after he drove in excess of the posted limit of 65 miles per hour on California State Route 99. A breathalyzer test showed his alcohol level was .137, almost twice the legal limit of .08. Tubbs apologized for what he called a "poor decision to drive when I should not have"[3] The arrest was discussed in a closed City Council session but no action was taken against Tubbs.[4] He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges and was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, participate in a 30-hour treatment program, and to perform a day of community service.[5]

Tubbs announced on November 19, 2016, that he was engaged to Anna Nti-Asare.[6]

Political career

Tubbs, after graduating from Stanford University, worked as an intern at the White House and later announced his candidacy for Stockton Council District 6 for the November 6, 2012 general election, running against incumbent Dale Pritchen. He won the primary for the office[7] and received a $10,000 campaign donation from Oprah Winfrey.[8]

Tubbs went on to win the election, receiving 61.7% of the vote, and took office in January 2013 at the age of 22, making him the youngest City Councilmember in Stockton's history and one of the youngest elected officials in the United States.[9] His candidacy was also the subject of a documentary called "True Son", which premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.[10]

Tubbs announced his candidacy for mayor of Stockton on September 2, 2015, running against incumbent Mayor Anthony Silva in the 2016 general election.[11] He was endorsed by President Barack Obama on November 2, 2016, less than a week before the election.[12] He went on to win the election, receiving 70.6% of the vote and becoming both the city's first black mayor and at 26 the youngest person to ever hold that office.[13]
