Mill Barrack

Mill Barrack (Bengali: মিল ব্যারাক) is a former military barracks situated at Gendaria, Dhaka, Bangladesh, currently occupied by the Range Reserve Force of the Metropolitan Police.[1] After the Indian Rebellion of 1857 it held the forces that had been located at Lalbagh Fort.[2] It held one of two police training schools that were set up in Bengal in 1903, and is now used for training traffic police.[3]

History

In 1850 it was completely closed. Sharif Uddin defined that, there is a sugar mill which didn’t exist for a long time. A flour mill also exists there. News was published at “Dhaka News” in 1858, which described that, there was a Flour Mill”. One British man named “William Floli” placed the Flour Mill after the closing of that sugar mill. Then it was known as “Foli’s Mill”.

In 1858, when the Army came to Dhaka from Calcutta for assistance, few of them stayed in Mill Barrack. Since that time this building and its surrounding area became known as Mill Barrack. From Cley’s report, government bought this Foli’s Mill for Residence of Army and in 1867, government announced that the mill and its surrounding area will be a Cantonment. After 1905, there was a Police Training Camp for a long time.

Architectural value and present condition

The place became a Police Lines, which was established in 1898. Its area around 25,000 sq. meters. It contains 5 buildings. The 1st building is two Storeyed Traffic Trading Building. 2nd building is Ration Store and 3rd building contains Ammunition storage. Both these buildings are two storey. The other 2 buildings are Barrack of Police Force and Staff & Administrative building, which are 3 storeyed.
