Movimento Italiano Genitori

The Italian Parents Movement (Italian: Movimento Italiano Genitori, known also by the acronym Moige) is an Italian non-profit, lobbyist, advocacy organization in Rome, Italy. Its mission is the protection of children and claim more rights for the parents.

Purpose

The main purpose is the safeguard of children and parents rights in the social life, the promotion of the figure of parents as fundamental element of society and the responsible use of parental authority.[1]

Through many social initiatives, the association aims to operate in 5 different areas:

  1. Television and cinema
  2. School and education
  3. Pedophilia prevention
  4. Health and road safety
  5. Internet and new media

Criticism and controversies

In the years the association has triggered many criticism on his alleged numerical representativeness on Italian population and about his points of view on sexuality issues, homosexuality and censorship.

Sexuality

Homosexuality

In various occasions the Moige was opposed to many initiatives to claim more rights in favour of the LGBT communities, in particularly regarding marriage and adoption[2] and has declared to accept the therapies promoted by Joseph Nicolosi and his National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, with a series of three lessons about sex education, claiming that homosexuality can be cured because it is not derived from genetic or hormonal imbalances but by psychological factors called "acquired factors" and treatable with psychotherapy,[3] in contrast with the ethical code of the National Order of Psychologists which states that "the psychologist may not offer oneself to start any 'reparative therapy' of sexual orientation of a person".[4]

The association makes a distinction between homosexual tendency and sexual behavior. Those who is attracted to person of same sex but without emotional or sexual relationships with them and thus hampers its volition and try to overcome their condition, hasn't a direct responsibility, and therefore can be treated successfully, and those who indulge volition will and has sexual relationships with persons of same sex is directly responsible and can not be cured,[5] and stated also homosexuality is a state full of suffering, similar to neurosis, and not likely to be alleviated by any reversal of the current mentality.[5] Moige argues also that elements of mental disorder such as trauma or the absence of the father during infancy lead children to homosexuality and the absence of the mother, lead girls to lesbianism.[3]

Masturbation

The masturbation is strongly discouraged and consequently condemned. It is also strongly disapproved of those who approved and recommended the masturbation as a means of self-knowledge and its own reactions and those who encouraged it as an opportunity for personal and interior growth.[6]

Censorship

Television

The Moige believes that television can be viewed by children, in certain time slots, without parents surveillance and reports to the competent authorities television programs considered unfit for children.

The association has accused the television shows Will & Grace (broadcast on Italia1) and I Fantastici 5 (the Italian edition of Queer Eye, broadcast on La7) to be a pathetic and unacceptable form of proselytism against children, where is harmful showing homosexuals as happy people and integrated in the society.[7]

The Mediaset's television channel Italia 1 was criticised for showing in the afternoon WWE SmackDown[8] for the risk of emulation by children and teenagers.[9]

The association it was also opposed to the television broadcasting of some movies, in particular Lolita (where the director Adrian Lyne and the film distributor were also denounced for incitement of pedophilia) and Eyes Wide Shut (even if the film was partially censored in compliance with the Italian television regulation).
