Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah[1] is a neurologist and the founder of the first super-speciality tertiarycare hospital in the North-East India popularly known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre Limited (GNRC) in Assam, India. He is also the Managing Trustee of Asian Institute of Nursing Education and also the owner of Medishop retail chain. Dr Borah set up GNRC in 1984 with the help of Dr. K V Mathai, well-known neurosurgeon from Vellore. Eventually, in 1985, GNRC was turned into a Limited Company.

Dr. Borah[2] did his MBBS course at Guwahati Medical College. He joined the Medical College as a demonstrator in Pathology and completed his Diploma in Clinical Pathology. He completed his MD degree in Internal Medicine, Dr. Borah joined AIIMS as Senior Resident, where he completed his 3 years training in Neurology leading to DM degree. In 1992, he did a Graduate Summer Course in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, USA.

Early life and background

Born in a peasant family at Dubia (Gohpur), Assam in 1950, Dr. NC Borah[3] had a humble beginning in life. Both his parents could not read and write but he was never denied education. His early education began in the village primary school. Besides his studies, he used to help his parents in the field.

Dr. Borah’s father was not financially sound but it never discouraged him to go for higher education and he did private tuitions to meet the expenses. Dr. Borah[4] passed his Higher Secondary Examination with flying colours and got admission into the MBBS course at Guwahati Medical College on merit list. An educational loan from Government of Assam and a state merit scholarship assisted him to complete his degree. After that he joined the Medical College as a demonstrator in Pathology and completed his Diploma in Clinical Pathology. Later on after completing his MD degree in Internal Medicine, Dr. Borah joined AIIMS in his 3 years training in Neurology leading to DM degree. In 1992 he did a Graduate Summer Course in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, USA.

Awards and honours

He has a number of Awards & Achievements such as the Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) for his contribution to neurological services in 2003. Certificate of Honor from State Bank of India for services of the Highest standard rendered in the development of the Medical facilities for the welfare of the people specially of the North Eastern India, 2004. East Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Service to Society through Individual Excellence, 2005. Certificate of Honour from Sadou Assam Sutiya Jati Sanmilan, 2005. Recognition from IGNOU by Profile Dr. N. C. Borah as a case study in the Chapter on "Rural Entrepreneurship - Strategies and Experiences" for M.Sc. Course in Social Sciences, 2007. Life Time Achievement Award from Premada Kanta Sarma Memorial for contribution towards Medical Services, 2008. Honoured with the title "Janamitra" from Sanskritik Mahasabha, Asom, 2011. Honorary Fellowship for significant contribution towards the development of Neurosciences in Eastern India from the Association of Neurosciences of Eastern India, 2012.
