October is a weekly Arabic political magazine published in Egypt. It is one of the state-owned publications in the country.[1]
History and profile
October was established by Dar Al Maarif group in 1976.[2][3] It is a political and social magazine and is published weekly on Saturdays.[2][4] Dar Al Maarif group is also the publisher of the weekly[5] which is owned by the Egyptian government[2] and is based in Cairo.[3]
Anis Mansour, an Egyptian writer, was the first editor-in-chief of the magazine[2] who held the post for a long period.[6][7] Ismail Montassar also served as the editor-in-chief of the weekly.[8] On 28 June 2014 Hassan Abu Taleb became the editor-in-chief of the magazine.[9]
During the period of Anis Mansour the magazine published the articles by Israeli writers between 1979 and 1981.[6][10] However, on 28 August 2011 the front-page article by Ibrahim Abd Al Ghani in the magazine developed an analogy between Israeli generals and Nazis.[11]
The circulation of the weekly in 2000 was 120,000 copies.[12]
