Administrative structure of the field forces of the British Army
The field forces of the British Army after the Army 2020 reforms are organised, in garrison as:[1][2]
- Reaction forces comprising a modified 16 Air Assault Brigade and an armoured division (3rd (UK) Division) of three armoured infantry brigades. These will be the 1st, 12th and 20th Armoured Infantry Brigades.[3][4]
- Adaptive forces comprising a division (1st (UK) Division) of seven infantry brigades, three of which (the 4th, 7th, and 51st) will be deployable.[5][6][7]
- Force Troops Command comprising nine brigades.
It should be noted that elements within the nine regionally-aligned brigades report to two separate command chains. Within each regionally-aligned brigade, such as 7th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters East, there is a Regional Point of Command (RPOC) that is responsible, not to 1st UK Division or Force Troops Command, but to Headquarters Regional Command at Andover.[8] These RPOCs handle routine links with the civilian community, ranges etc, and the 'defence contribution to homeland resilience' - homeland defence.
Operational direction is via Permanent Joint Headquarters, and brigades or other deployed task groups reporting to deployed commanders who, in turn, report to the Chief of Joint Operations.
