Oraifite
Oraifite is a town in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State of Nigeria, located about 15 km south of Onitsha on the Onitsha – Owerri highway. It is bounded on the east by Nnewi, on the west by the creeks of the River Niger and Atani, on the north by Ichi, Ojoto, Oba and Akwukwu, on the south by Ozubulu.
Oraifite people share a common ancestry with Nnewi and Ichi towns that make up the ANA-EDO clan. The population estimate of Oraifite was about 30,000 in 1996. Oraifite people were traditionally farmers and wine tappers. The town is endowed with rich and arable expanse of agricultural land. A segment of the town is seasonally riverine having been invaded by the tributaries of the River Niger (Ngbo Waterway) and have been dubbed the food basket of Anambra state. It also plays host to a considerable but latent palm wine taping and fishing industry. The Ngbo-Waterway offered the opportunity of early contact with European adventures, firstly the Portuguese merchants, much later the British Colonialists and Missionaries. Since the early embrace of Western civilization, the people of Oraifite have not looked back in the giant strides of scholastic pursuit. The predominant religion now is Christianity but before the advent of Christianity, the people were animists.
Oraifite land area extends from the Niger Flood Plains (Mgbo) in the west and rises to high ground towards Nnewi to the east. The Ekwusigo highway runs along the ridge of the town and the plains are better appreciated when viewed around Oba (from behind Rojenny Holiday Resort Oba). The town bounded and dissected into two parts by Ekulo Streams and is bounded in the south by the Eze Stream. These streams empty into the Ose River through a very complex system of water-ways in the Niger Flood Plains (Mgbo), which is navigable by small boats down to Atani town by the River Niger. The Isi-Obi is the traditional head of Oraifite people
Four Springs serve as sources of drinking water: isi Mmili Irefi, Enem Urudunu, Isi amiyi Umunakwa and Ose Unodu. There is a small lake called Omelu nwa ogbuagu Irefi. The raffia palm trees are found mainly at Mgbo Unodu which is situated at the creeks of the River Niger, while the Iroko and other timber producing trees are scattered all over the land.
