Patrick Milling Smith
Patrick Milling Smith co-founded production company Smuggler with Brian Carmody. Smuggler has brought home the Cannes Lions Palme d'Or three times (including most recently in 2015) and has brought home several Cannes Lions Grand Prixs, Titanium Grand Prix, and two Emmy Awards amongst other accolades.[1] It has been awarded ‘Production Company of the Year’ by several leading commercial industry magazines and award shows over the past few years, including 2010 by Creativity magazine.[2] Smuggler was awarded 2011 Clio Awards Production Company of the Year and received a 2011 Made in New York Award by Mayor Bloomberg.[3]
Patrick produced Greetings from Tim Buckley and executive produced both Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian starring Benicio Del Toro and Electric Slide starring Jim Sturgess, Chloe Sevigny and Patricia Arquette.[4] [5] Upcoming film projects include Beautiful Ruins to be adapted by Todd Field,[6] Weightless written by Enda Walsh and starring Alessandro Nivola, a remake of cult classic The Wild Geese written by William Monahan and the adaptation of Jean Anouilh’s play Becket written by William Monahan and to be directed by Michael Mann.[7]
Patrick produced the play Seminar starring Alan Rickman which premiered on Broadway in November, 2011 [8] and also acquired the stage rights to Robert Evans' memoir The Kid Stays in the Picture which is scheduled to debut on Broadway in 2017.[9]
Patrick adapted the film Once for the stage. Once (musical) was adapted by Enda Walsh and directed by John Tiffany. It premiered at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 6, 2011 and is produced in association with Frederick Zollo and Barbara Broccoli.[10] After a successful run in previews Once moved to Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and officially opened Sunday, March 18, 2012.[11] Once is the fastest recouping musical to hit Broadway in over a decade, recouping its initial $5.5 million investment after only 21 weeks and 169 performances.[12]
Once won the Best Musical Award from The Drama Desk, The Outer Critics' Circle, Drama League, and The New York Drama Critics' Circle.[13] It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2012 and won 8 including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical.[14] On February 10, 2013, Once also took home Best Musical Theater Album at the 55th annual Grammy Awards.[15] In addition to touring the US, Once is currently playing in Toronto, Australia, Korea and London's West End where it was nominated for six Olivier Awards including Best Musical in 2014. It picked up two Olivier awards for Best Achievement in Music and Best Actress. The Toronto production of Once most recently won Outstanding Production of a Musical at the Dora Mava Moore Awards. [16] [17]
In 2014 Patrick co-founded virtual reality production company Vrse.works with Chris Milk.[18] In December 2014, Chris Milk and Spike Jonze captured the Million Man March in NY which protested police brutality for Vice News.[19] Vrse.works launched the Vrse app platform at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival in addition to Evolution of Verse, a photo-realistic CGI-rendered 3-D virtual reality film, and Clouds Over Sidra, a virtual reality documentary made in partnership with the United Nations which follows a 12-year-old girl's life in a Syrian refugee camp. [20] After the Sundance launch, Vrse.works captured Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary special in VR and created '‘Catatonic'’, an immersive journey through an insane asylum in which the audience, bound to a wheelchair, undergoes a sensory shocking horror thrill ride. [21] [22] Patrick produced Walking New York, a VR experience made in partnership with the New York Times which follows JR (artist) and his making of a 150-foot-tall portrait of a recent immigrant to NYC that was wheat pasted across the Flatiron Building Pedestrian Plaza for less than 24 hours.[23] Recent projects include Nike's The Neymar Jr Effect, which takes viewers into Neymar's POV as he plays soccer and an experiential film for Toms Shoes that gives users the chance to participate in a Toms Giving Trip to Peru. [24] [25] Vrse.works also most recently partnered again with the United Nations to create the VR experience Waves of Grace. The film transports viewers to West Point, the most populous slum in the capital of Liberia, and follows the experience of Decontee Davis, an Ebola survivor who uses her immunity to help others affected by the disease.
