Phase sequence
Phase sequence, in the context of three-phase electric power systems, refers to the order of oscillation of the three phases. Generated by a single, balanced AC source the individual phases will oscillate with equal voltages but delayed phase angles of 0°, 120° and 240° respectively. The delay means each phase will peak one after the other until one period has passed where the cycle will repeat. This steady sequence allows the phases to be numbered with respect to their order 1 to 3. This is not exclusive to three phase systems, but any multiple phase system however to maintain a steady phase sequence the electrical separation of the phases must be equal and sum to 360°.[1]
