Pneumatosis (pneumat- + -osis) is the abnormal presence of air or other gas within tissues. There are various types, as follows:
- Pneumatosis intestinalis, air or gas cysts in the bowel wall
- Gastric pneumatosis, air or gas cysts in the stomach wall
- Pneumothorax, air or gas in the pleural space
- Pneumoperitoneum, air or gas in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity
- Pneumomediastinum, air or gas in the mediastinum
