Christopher Nicholas "Nick" Bertke (born 26 July 1988), better known by his stage name Pogo, is an Australian electronic music artist. His work consists of recording small sounds, quotes, and melodies from a film or TV programme, and sequencing the sounds together to form a new piece of music. In most of his works, the newly created piece of music consists solely of the sounds he samples from those films or scenes, without additional, 'external' music or sound effects.

Music

Bertke's track "Alice" is a composition of sounds from the Disney film Alice in Wonderland.[4] He took part in a project hosted by Disney/Pixar to produce a track based on their film, Up, titled "UPular".[5] Bertke has since produced many more mixes, including "Toyz Noize" and "Buzzwing" based on the film Toy Story.[6]

Bertke has produced tracks using samples from films and TV shows such as Mary Poppins, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Sword in the Stone, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, H.R. Pufnstuf, The Secret Garden, The King and I,[7] Hook, Toy Story, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin, Terminator 2: Judgment Day,[8] The Lord of the Rings, and Pulp Fiction.[9] A number of tracks featured during live shows, but commissioned and owned by Disney remain unreleased.

On 29 September 2016, Pogo had released a song called "Trumpular" on SoundCloud which consisted of quotes from republican nominee Donald Trump. An unusual release, Pogo's said that “Trump is such a crazy fucker that I couldn’t resist mixing him up,”.[10] Pogo later released the music video for the song on 2 October 2016.

Personal life

Bertke is from Perth, Western Australia.

On his September 2011 US tour, Bertke was arrested and taken into custody for three weeks due to the lack of a proper work visa.[11] He is now prohibited from re-entering the United States until 2021.[1][12]

In March 2014, Bertke abruptly deactivated most of his social media presence. In a blog post, he stated that social media has "become an unhealthy part of my life and a danger to the personal relationship I have with my work." Bertke explained that he was withdrawing from the public eye and would be selling his work "through digital stores."[13]
