List of The Powerpuff Girls characters

This is a list of characters who appeared on the American animated television series The Powerpuff Girls, which aired on Cartoon Network.

The Powerpuff Girls

Blossom

Blossom (voiced by Jennifer Fried in Whoopass Stew pilot, and Cathy Cavadini) is "the smart girl" and self-proclaimed leader of the Powerpuff Girls. Her personality is "everything nice", her signature color is pink, and she has long red hair with a red bow on the top of her head and a heart-shaped hairclip that can be seen from behind. She is often seen as the most level-headed, and composed member of the group and also strong and determined. She can also be fussy, overbearing, vain, and overly analytical at times. She tends to "mother" Bubbles and Buttercup, and often tries to play peacemaker between the two if they fight but ironically she is quick to argue with Buttercup who acts on impulse as opposed to her analytical nature. She is naturally caring to mainly her sisters, but also the Professor as well. In "A Very Special Blossom," we are shown a darker side to Blossom when she resorts to stealing the Pro-Excellence 2000 Golf Clubs for the Professor, who later says it's his fault for putting too much value in a material item instead of the love for the Girls. For this, her first (and fortunately only) offense, Blossom was sentenced to 200 hours of community service, which was a harsh reminder to her and to all that crime doesn't pay. Blossom is drawn to lavish intellect-enhancing toys and is often seen, in her free time, curled up with a good book. In the episode "Power-Noia" Blossom has nightmares about failing a test for which she forgot to study, only to find out that HIM is behind the girls' nightmares. The same episode establishes that Blossom is the smartest girl in Townsville. She also stated in a movie interview that she finds inspiration from female superheroes. Her unique power is freezing objects with her breath as seen in the episode "Ice Sore" (although at the end of the episode, she was known to breathe fire). When flying she leaves a curved pink trail.

Bubbles

Bubbles (voiced by Jennifer Freid in Whoopass Stew pilot, Kath Soucie in the What a Cartoon! episodes, and by Tara Strong in the series) is "the cute one". Her personality is "sugar", her signature color is Light Blue, and she has blond hair worn in pigtails. She was named for her cute and bubbly personality, as revealed when she giggled after the Professor named Blossom. Her best friend is a stuffed octopus doll she calls "Octi". She exhibits the ability to both understand and speak foreign languages (Japanese, Spanish), as she can read and understand Japanese manga and understand people who speak Spanish. Bubbles can also communicate with various animals (cats, squirrels and even monsters). However, the episodes "Super Zeroes" and "Nuthin' Special" illustrate that in the above respective languages she uses a word for word translation rather than the thought-for-thought method of people more fluent in foreign languages. She also shows the ability to emit a sonic scream (in the episode "Stuck Up, Up and Away"). Bubbles can also spit fire as seen in the episode "Simian Says". She will always stand up for (and cuddle with) animals except cockroaches, which she (along with her sisters) finds "icky". Bubbles is defined by her innocence, playfulness and gentle demeanor, having a tendency to be naive, ditzy, submissive, timid and sensitive. These traits initially caused those around her, especially Blossom and Buttercup, to underestimate her abilities as a superhero; her naivety has been used against her at least twice by Him. But in the episode "Bubblevicious", she proves her mettle to her sisters when she single-handedly defeats Mojo Jojo. At times she can be dim-witted and a bit of a loud-mouth. In "The Boys are Back in Town" she expressed a slight crush on Boomer. Craig McCracken stated in a World Priemere Toons interview that she is the "little more air-headed one". Also, in the episode "Octi Evil", she says she hates to see her sisters fight. When flying she leaves a loopy, swirly blue trail.

Buttercup

Buttercup (voiced by Jennifer Fried in Whoopass Stew pilot, and E. G. Daily) is the toughest of the Powerpuff Girls. Her personality is "spice", her signature color is Lime Green, and she has short black hair in a flip. Buttercup actually likes the color blue. She frowned and pouted when the Professor named her simply because, like her previously-named sisters, her name "also starts with B". She can be hard to agree with to Bubbles and Blossom at times, but is the toughest fighter of the Powerpuff Girls, not only because of her "spice" side but because, as revealed in one episode, the reason why Buttercup tries her hardest to defeat whichever antagonists she must is because of her green blanket. Buttercup can be the most surly Powerpuff Girl at times, but is practically fearless, loyal, quick-witted and willing to fight. Buttercup can be selfish at times, as revealed in one episode when the Powerpuff Girls started working for gold dollar allowances and Buttercup became fascinated by gold dollar coins, but soon discovered that she could obtain more by knocking out criminals' teeth and leaving the teeth for the Tooth Fairy. She is shown to be fairly protective of her sisters and the Professor, though, and will not hesitate to confront anybody who speaks badly of them, such as in the episode "The Boys Are Back in Town" when she unwittingly discovers the Rowdyruff Boys' weakness after hitting Butch's tongue, who was laughing at Bubbles after putting a slug down the back of her dress while in sort of an unconscious state. She never saw the importance of taking regular baths until she finds criminals hard to come by when she's dirty. She is often reckless, but can be fairly witty at times, and she is frequently sarcastic. Also, she may be stronger than her other sisters, as revealed in the episode "Octi Evil" when she throws a monster rolled up in a ball to Blossom, which goes through various buildings. In one episode, she fights a monster all by herself without her sisters' help. She also has desires to be the leader instead of Blossom (revealed in "Octi Evil"). Craig McCracken stated in a World Priemere Toons interview that she is "the real quiet but real tough one". When flying she leaves a straight, sharp, jagged light green trail.

Allies

Professor Utonium

Professor Utonium (voiced by Tom Kane) is a brilliant scientist who works in his home in the suburbs of the City of Townsville. A stereotypical scientist, his general attire is a white lab coat and black pants with pens tucked into the lab coat's breast pocket. The Professor once housed a chimpanzee named Jojo (later to become the girls' arch-enemy, Mojo Jojo) as a lab assistant who proved to be reckless and destructive. Jojo pushed the Professor while he was stirring his perfect girl concoction, causing him to accidentally break through a glass containing the mysterious "Chemical X" which spilled into the perfect girl formula, thus creating the Powerpuff Girls. The Professor is a genius in many fields of science, having shown knowledge in fields such as physics, chemistry, and biology as well as being a skilled inventor. Aside from his role as a scientist, he acts as a parent in The Powerpuff Girls' lives, doing fatherly things such as preparing their school lunches or cheering up the girls when they have been hurt. Although he apparently did not legally "adopt" the girls, everyone who addresses him calls him "their father" and they as "his daughters"; the girls occasionally refer to him as "our dad". The Professor can be strict, easily manipulated and overprotective at times, but still retains his caring fatherly image. In the episode "Keen for Keane", the girls set up Professor Utonium and their kindergarten teacher Ms. Keane on a date for Valentine's Day, resulting in the two temporarily becoming an item. They called it off after a fight due to Professor Utonium not liking cats.

The Mayor of Townsville

The Mayor of Townsville (voiced by Tom Kenny in the series and by Jim Cummings in the What a Cartoon! episodes) is generally referred throughout only as "Mayor", although he is referred to as "Barney" by his wife in the episode "Boogie Frights". He is short and old with a fringe of white hair around a bald scalp and a thick mustache. He wears a monocle over his left eye and a small top hat that floats just above his head. He also has a love for pickles. The Mayor is dimwitted but loves his city. He is very childish at times, such as in the episode "That's Not My Baby" where he complains in a childish voice to Miss Bellum, asking why they cannot name Main Street after himself. He sometimes calls the girls for very silly reasons, as seen in the episode "Bubblevicous" when he calls because of a traffic jam. The episode "Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins" featured a different Mayor who was younger and taller than the Mayor of the series. In the episode "Hot Air Buffoon", he decided to save Townsville instead of the Powerpuff girls, but it didn't turn out so well.

Ms. Sara Bellum

Ms. Sara Bellum (voiced by Jennifer Martin and by Julie Nathanson as a child) is The Mayor's very competent, pretty, statuesque, and apparently beautiful Secretary who often handles the things the Mayor cannot. She has long, curly red hair, wears a red dress and red high heel shoes for a secretary look. Her face is never shown onscreen, although "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!" briefly revealed part of it. Running gags include other onscreen characters often finding her very beautiful, the camera focusing on her chest, her face always being obscured, and her being Townsville's most competent resident. Her name is a pun on the word cerebellum. She has also helped the girls defeat the Rowdyruff Boys in the episode "The Rowdyruff Boys", where she advised the girls to "instead of fighting, try being nice" (in other words, kiss them) to destroy them, which ended up working. She also proved to be a capable fighter, battling Sedusa by herself when the girls were disabled. She made a cameo in an episode of Chowder, in which it is implied she is to be the police chief's blind date.

Ms. Keane

Ms. Keane (voiced by Jennifer Hale, and by Kath Soucie in the What-a-Cartoon! episodes) is the kindergarten teacher of Pokey Oaks Kindergarten. She wears an orange shirt, red vest, brown pants, and has short black hair and light blue eyes. She is patient, understanding and very protective of her students, making her a well-liked, motherly figure. She also owns an orange cat named Valentino. Although Ms. Keane is a kindergarten teacher, she is also incredibly smart. This was shown in the episode "Speed Demon" when she, prior to the girls' time travel, actually tried to figure out how the speed of a person throwing an apple could make said apple travel faster than the speed of light and thus being able to travel though time and space. Soon realizing that she is confusing the children, she returns to her normal state, and excuses herself. Ms. Keane also forbids any fighting in school even if there's a crisis taking place within it thus she convinces the girls that there are other ways to solve problems other than fighting as demonstrated in the episode "Schoolhouse Rocked". In the episode "Imaginary Fiend", a new student came to Pokey Oaks Kindergarten named Mike. The girls find the new kid very strangely when Mike talks to himself, but he was actually talking to his imaginary friend. At a part of the episode, Ms. Keane and her students all believed that Mike's imaginary friend was in everyone's imagination. The girls tried to fight him by using their own imagination. In the episode "Keen for Keane", the girls set up Ms. Keane and Professor Utonium on a date for Valentine's Day, resulting in the two temporarily becoming an item. They called it off after a fight due to Professor Utonium not liking cats.

Narrator

Narrator (voiced by Tom Kenny in the series and by Ernie Anderson in the What a Cartoon! episodes) is the enthusiastic but unseen narrator, known for opening nearly every episode with "The City of Townsville!" and ending most of them with "So once again, the day is saved, thanks to... the Powerpuff Girls"! He often comments on the proceedings of the episode, says things which happen to be hints about the plots of certain episodes, and frequently breaks the fourth wall. He is only seen at one point in the series (in the episode "A Made Up Story" he wakes up the mayor who is sleeping under the podium. Viewers see only his hand and part of his arm), though he is a person and not just a disembodied voice. He is also shown to be the only connection between the audience and the girls, as he can "talk" to both and even be involved, such as Mojo Jojo transforming him into a dog. In the episode "Simian Says", he is kidnapped by Mojo Jojo, who promptly takes his place as the episode begins, granting Mojo Jojo the power to narrate the story as he sees fit; the girls have no choice but to go along with the narrative until they accidentally find him dictating the story's events, suggesting that the Narrator has absolute power over the story, though he never seems to exercise it himself. He's also been seen to take a considerably large amount of pain and destruction on occasion when The Girl's city battles are almost too overwhelming. A good example of this was seen in one episode where the city was in really deep trouble from a monster attack and his camera got destroyed. He also got very badly (and very humorously) hurt in the episode.

Talking Dog

Talking Dog (voiced by Tom Kane in the series and by Paul Mercier in the What a Cartoon! episodes) is a small white dog with black ears and nose and a black spot on his back, wearing a red collar with a yellow dog tag. He mostly appears as a background character, but always has something to say. In the episode "Shut the Pup Up", he was taken in by the Girls when he became the sole witness to a mystery crime. When he stays with the girls he is shown to be blunt, abrasive and insulting in that episode, though his demeanor remains straightforward and earnest. He is frequently abused in almost every appearance he makes, but, as a running gag, no one ever seems to regard his pain and simply ignore him.

Mitch Mitchelson

Mitchell "Mitch" Mitchelson (voiced by Tom Kenny): The bully at Pokey Oaks Kindergarten. Mitch has brownish hair, and wears a black T-shirt with the words "MITCH ROCKS" on the front. Usually talks in a gruff voice; he torments the kids in the class in a few episodes, though he is not a major threat. He is Buttercup's close friend, according to Buttercup in her interview in the DVD features of The Powerpuff Girls Movie. For a brief time he hosted a short segment on Cartoon Network called "Mitch Rocks", where he looked at or watched various things and said whether they "rock" or not.

Villains of Townsville

Mojo Jojo

Mojo Jojo (voiced by Roger L. Jackson) is a mad scientist chimpanzee with great intelligence, who speaks in a Japanese accent poking fun at the poor dubbing of Speed Racer, although it was never stated whether or not he was from Japan. As the main antagonist of the series and the Powerpuff Girls' arch-enemy, Mojo Jojo was Professor Utonium's reckless laboratory assistant, Jojo, before Professor Utonium created the Powerpuff Girls.[1] He has green skin and pink whites in his eyes, and wears a white turban of clay with three purple upside down V-shaped lines towards the metal purple jeweled base and two purple circles inside each other on both sides at the top that covers his large, oversized brain that was caused by the explosion that created the girls. He wears white gloves and boots, a blue suit with a white belt, and a long wavy, purple cape. Despite his high intelligence, he is not good at planning his schemes, and as a result they fall apart. However, he is a master at manipulation and trickery, often fooling the girls into thinking he has changed despite their constant encounters.

Him

Him (voiced by Tom Kane) is a mysterious, supernatural, effeminate, immortal, androgynous, and demonic monster. His physical appearance is an amalgamation of sorts with lobster-like claws, red skin, pointed ears, a hooked nose, yellow/green eyes and a long curled beard, wearing makeup, a woman's red jacket and skirt with pink tulle at the collar and hemline, and black, thigh-high, spike-heeled boots. His voice ranges from a high-pitched falsetto to a deep, booming basso profondo. According to the narrator in Him's first appearance, he is "so evil, so sinister, so horribly vile, that even the utterance of his name strikes fear into the hearts of men". He is shown to feed off the negative emotions of human beings and become powerless when there is little or no negativity in the air. He refers to the other villains as mortals, which further supports the argument that he is the devil. In one of the original Whoopass Girls shorts, he is identified as the true devil, but never in the regular series. Him's plans are usually psychological in nature, and often consist of manipulating events to either drive the Powerpuff Girls insane or simply drive wedges between them. Craig McCracken has stated that the character "Him" was inspired by the Chief Blue Meanie in the 1968 film, Yellow Submarine. Most episodes him is featured in are all one story episodes. Craig McCracken stated Him is his favorite villain.[2]

Fuzzy Lumpkins

Fuzzy Lumpkins (voiced by Jim Cummings) is a large, husky, furry pink bear/Bigfoot-like hillbilly monster with a wide jaw, a green nose, two antennae on his head, big blue overalls and brown countryman shoes with a banjo. He is the first villain ever to be introduced in the series, appearing in the pilot "Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins" where he turned the people of Townsville into meat after he lost in the jam contest. He talks with a country accent, and will shoot anything he finds trespassing on his property but is otherwise harmless. He lives in the woods next to the city of Townsville. He is also prone to destructive fits of rage, from which he gains enough physical strength to overpower (and sometimes intimidate) the girls. When angry, Fuzzy turns dark red, he grows claws and his teeth turn sharp, while usually they are large and square. His only friend is a banjo he calls "Joe", although he has three close relations (Furry, Fluffy, and Hairy), three nephews (Buzzy, Wuzzy, and Scuzzy), and several dozen cousins who heavily resemble him.

Princess Morbucks

Princess Morbucks (voiced by Jennifer Hale) is a spoiled, rich, and bratty little girl, whose partially unseen and mostly mute father allows her to finance various evil plots to destroy the Powerpuff Girls. Her supervillain outfit consists of a yellow, Powerpuff-style dress, black gloves and boots, and a tiara. In the episode "Stuck Up, Up, and Away" she is told by Buttercup that she cannot "just buy superpowers", and she retorts, "Oh yeah, tell that to Batman!" Her hatred of the girls stems from her rebuffed attempt to become one of them. Every time she somehow manages to obtain super powers, the girls manage to defeat her (although often by no means easily), and Princess loses her super powers and must start all over again. Despite her well-defined goal of destroying the Powerpuff Girls and frequent collaboration with the series's other villains, some fans and critics do not consider Princess to be an actual villain. These people point out that Princess's quest to gain super powers is a coming of age sign, which represents a young girl's desire to be similar to the most popular girls around. Her father is "Daddy" Morbucks, a large, rotund man whose face and head are always hidden from the viewer. He dotes on his daughter and usually indulges in her whim, but it is hinted that his patience is limited and Princess fears truly angering him. Thanks to him, Princess has access to virtually unlimited financial resources. Her last name,"Morbucks", is a reference to Daddy Warbucks from the musical, Annie.

The Ganggreen Gang


The Ganggreen Gang are a gang of five teenage hoodlums that are green-skinned and unhealthy looking. They originally appeared alongside The Amoeba Boys in McCracken's original short, Whoopass Stew, as the villains the girls are shown fighting in the introduction (rather than every major recurring villain on the show). They do not have powers, nor are they truly a threat; however, they do have special characteristics and they did once obtain powers in the episode "Power Lunch". According to Craig McCracken, the Ganggreen Gang are a cross between the characters from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and Rat Fink. Not possessing any powers or exceptional abilities, the Gang is normally not too much of a threat to the girls, but have shown themselves to be very dangerous when motivated, such as when they received training from Sedusa to help her steal a series of magical artifacts. They also delight in tormenting those weaker than themselves, especially children and the elderly.

The Amoeba Boys

The Amoeba Boys (voiced by Chuck McCann in the series and the What a Cartoon! episodes and by Lou Romano in Whoopass Stew) are a trio of amoebae who are the villains featured in McCracken's original short, Whoopass Stew in A Sticky Situation. They reappear in the What a Cartoon! short Crime 101. With their gangster affectations, these aspiring criminals would love nothing more than to be regarded as serious villains worthy of fighting, and even getting beaten up and sent to jail by the Powerpuff Girls. Unfortunately, their brains are too primitive to devise a crime above the level of littering or jaywalking. Indeed, they considered stealing an orange to be their greatest crime ever in the episode "Divide and Conquer". They are Townsville's least malicious villains, even having a friendship-of-sorts with the girls. They are generally harmless, but their actions have on occasion endangered both the girls and the town purely by accident. The greatest threat they have posed to Townsville and the girls was in episode "Geshundfight", when they each caught a cold that, when merged with their DNA, created a severe virus that quickly spread through the city, making even the healthiest person fall ill instantaneously.

Sedusa

Sedusa (voiced by Jennifer Hale) is a young, beautiful, and mistress of disguise and seductress who uses her feminine wiles to influence men to do her bidding. When her identity is revealed, she typically doffs down to her leotard battle suit and fights with her whip-like hair (which she can control). In her introduction episode "Mommy Fearest", she poses as an ordinary woman named "Ima Goodlady". She becomes powerless when her hair becomes wet (or cut off). In episode "Something's a Miss", she poses as Miss Bellum, tying up and gagging the real Miss Bellum at her house (after dressing her up as Sedusa) and seducing the Mayor to perpetrate heists. In this episode, she had the ability to whip off globs of sticky hair gel adhering people to walls, but she was taken down by Miss Bellum, who cut off her hair. In the episode "Aspirations", Sedusa seduces the Ganggreen Gang into stealing Egyptian artifacts. She is still bald from when Miss Bellum cuts off her hair. When she gets the artifacts, she becomes giant and rather than hair, deadly asps (snakes) grow from her head. Sedusa betrays the Ganggreen Gang, which leads to Ace telling Blossom to take the crown from Sedusa, which the other artifacts do not work without. Sedusa loses her hair once more, as well as her gigantic stature. She begs the boys to help her, but they refuse and Sedusa is sent back to jail. Her eyes also change color depending on her mood. When she is happy or nice her eye color is green, but when she is angry or evil, they are red. This is seen in the episode "Mommy Fearest". Her name is a combination of the word "seduce" and Medusa from Greek mythology.

The Rowdyruff Boys

The Rowdyruff Boys are the male counterparts of the Powerpuff Girls created by Mojo Jojo using a mixture of "snips, snails, and a puppy dog tail" in the Townsville Prison in the episode called "The Rowdyruff Boys". His replacement for chemical X was in fact prison toilet water (that was glowing), as Mojo Jojo believed that would have the same potency as Chemical X. An important difference between the trios is that the Powerpuff Girls got their names from Professor Utonium and the name of their team from the narrator, while the Rowdyruff Boys named themselves and their team. After their resurrection, the Boys' hairstyles become noticeably spikier, Him claims credit for this in episode "Custody Battle". Their personalities are also more developed where they had once had similar behavior. The Boys wear long-sleeved shirts with a black stripe in each, black trousers and black, low-top sneakers with white laces and white soles.

The Rowdyruff Boys are essentially violent bullies who have the same powers as the Powerpuff Girls, with their own techniques as well. In their first appearance, they nearly destroy them in a violent clash that reduced a great deal of Townsville to rubble (this is the first and one of the few times the Girls were defeated outright). The Girls were so ashamed of their defeat that they planned to leave Townsville until Ms. Bellum suggested using a different tactic. The boys were shocked to find the girls alive but instead of a fight, they were flirted with. They were ultimately destroyed when the girls kissed them.

The Rowdyruff Boys were later resurrected by Him in the episode "The Boys Are Back in Town". Much to the Girls' shock they were given immunity to the Girls' kisses, which made the Boys grow bigger and more powerful. The Boys eventually got their revenge on the Girls firstly by grossing them out in various ways, such as cracking their knuckles, picking scabs and spitting. The Boys then move on to play violent sports using the Girls as targets. When Buttercup rise up after sees The boys putting a giant Slug to Bubbles's Back and made Butch bite his tongue, he almost cries with pain and shrinks under his brothers' laughter. Blossom realizes that when their masculinity was threatened they would shrink, and the Girls do various things to embarrass them such as putting make-up on them, pulling down their pants and treating them like babies. This reduces them to tears of embarrassment as they had shrunk smaller than the buckles of the Girls' shoes. Him intervenes and takes the Boys back, threatening this would not be the last of them.

In "Boy Toys",Princess Morbucks later meets the Rowdyruff Boys after they crash into her car during a fight with the Powerpuff Girls. She notices the Boys are evil and have all the powers the Girls do, which is exactly what she wants. Princess asks the Boys if she can join them, but because of their misogyny they merely burst out laughing and cruelly reject her. This causes Princess to offer the Girls help to destroy the Boys with a variety of her weapons. The Girls accept her offer, but in a way as such the Boys would be helpless with laughter after enjoying playing with and destroying her weapons.

During the episode "City of Clipsville", the Girls recall several events that have happened to them in the past. In one recollection, the Girls sped up time and became teenagers, where they also encounter the teenage Rowdyruff Boys. The behavior of the Girls and the Boys is very different to how it was when they were children; the Girls are no longer heroic crime fighters, but shopping and party loving ditzes (something which they themselves admit to after reminiscing about it). Meanwhile, the Boys are no longer wild and unruly criminals, but more like slackers. They also do not behave misogynistically towards the Girls. Conversely, both the Boys and the Girls express an almost intimate interest in each other.

In the final episode of The Boys, Mojo Jojo is amazed when he discovers the Boys are alive. This results in a conflict between Him and Mojo over who is the real father of the Boys and who is the most evil. They both perform various acts to demonstrate to them their "evilness". In some cases the Boys are impressed, but after a while they become annoyed by their antics and declare that the only evil thing they care about is destroying the Powerpuff Girls. This reduces Mojo and Him to tears of happiness.

The Powerpunk Girls

The Powerpunk Girls are the negative counterparts of the "Powerpuff Girls" from a parallel universe and are the complete opposites of their heroic counterparts. The Powerpunk Girls are the Powerpuff's evil counterparts created by an evil version of Professor Utonium known as Oppressor Plutonium. The girls appear only once in the official comic series in issue #50 called "Deja View", originally this was going to be an episode for the series.[3] Not much is known about their personality due to their debut and sole appearance being in a comic. From the comic, it is shown that they are somewhat sassy and quick thinking, as well as excited that they have a brand-new city to destroy. Rather than being a villain, Mojo Jojo is also reversed as a hero called "Jomo Momo".[3]
