Rochelle (Shelley) Buffenstein is a professor of Physiology at the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio naked mole-rats.[1][3][4]

Her research focuses on comparative vertebrate physiology, energetics, cancer biology, and aging. She has worked with marsupials, mole-rats, tenrecs, bats, subterranean mammals, and primates. Her lab is testing theories of aging including oxidative damage theory, the advanced glycation end product theory, and the telomere theory.[1]

In a 2010 interview following the death of a 32-year-old naked mole-rat named Old Man, Buffenstein said, "Mole rats are a lot like bees in their social structure. When the queen dies, the other females in the colony will fight to the death to succeed her."[5]
