Rohru is a town and a municipal committee in Shimla district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is at the banks of the Pabbar River, and it is about 115 km from Shimla city. Rohru is famous for its apples and trout fishing. The hatchery is at Dhamwari, 25 km upstream of Rohru town. The Nazeru davta's temple is in Shakli, 15 km upstream.

Geography

Rohru is at 31°12′07″N 77°45′07″E / 31.202°N 77.7519°E / 31.202; 77.7519. It has an average elevation of 1,525  metres (5,003 feet).

Rohru is very popular for highly dense forests and jungle ranges. The temperature remains around 10-15 C with fog covering the area most of the time throughout the year.

Rohru also has many high snow belts like Chanshal Top (Rohru), Surachali Top (Rohru-jubbal). Chandernahn is an important mountain belt with high altitude (10000 ft above mean sea level) and snow throughout the year. Khara-pathar (jubbal), Sungri etc. and several beautiful valleys like Hatkoti are here as well. Khara pathar, Gwass-Bagi valley, Chanshil Top, Surachali Top and Antapu (Arhal-Batari) and Sungri are popular for record snow in winters.

Throughout the year the climate and the weather conditions are perfect for apple production. These areas are highly rich in apple production. Nandpur region in Jubbal is also famous for its fine apples.

Demographics

As of 2010 India census,[1] Rohru had a population of 14953. Males constitute 59% of the population and females 41%. Rohru has an average literacy rate of 94%, much higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 96%, and female literacy is 92%. In Rohru, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Rohru is popular for its high per capita income and the high standard of living.

Agriculture

Rohru is very popular for its high-quality apple production. The production of apples on the whole is maximum when compared to any other area. The apples are exported around the country and to other countries as well.

Rohru, Jubbal and Kothkhai are the highest apple production valleys and cover more than half of the production in Himachal. This Rohru-Hatkoti-Jubbal-Kothkhai belt is popularly known as "Apple Valley" or "Golden Belt" in Himachal and India. From some parts of Apple Valley the apples are directly exported or provided to popular juice-making companies in India and the world.

Government

Rohru has a number of offices of Himachal government and a weekly session of Shimla High Court convenes regularly as well.

Initially Rohru was a part of Bhushar State but was later declared as an individual tehsil by the Himachal government. Rohru has an individual MLA seat.

Member of Legislative Assembly Rohru is Mohan Lal Brakta of Congress. Virbhadra Singh (current CM of Himachal) has been elected as an MLA from Rohru for three terms.

Rohru has seen much of development in the last decade with a hospital, degree colleges, professional colleges (ITI, Government Pharmacy college, etc.) being set up. A national-level cricket stadium has been developed in Rohru.
