Russ Girling is a Canadian businessman. He serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of TransCanada Corporation.

Early life

Russ Girling graduated from the University of Calgary, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Business Administration in Finance.[1]

Career

Girling worked for Suncor, Northridge Petroleum Marketing and Dome Petroleum.[1]

Girling joined the TransCanada Corporation in 1994.[1] He became its Executive Vice-President in 1995.[1] Under his leadership, he created the subsidiary, TransCanada Power.[1] In 2001, he became the President of TransCanada Gas Services.[1] He subsequently served as the Executive Vice-President of Corporate Development and Chief Financial Officer of TransCanada, until he became the President of Pipelines of TransCanada Corporation.[1] In this capacity, he oversaw gas and oil pipelines in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.[1] He was later promoted to Chief Operating Officer.[1] Since July 1, 2010, he has served as the president and chief executive officer of the TransCanada Corporation.[1][2] He faced criticisms from environmentalists over the construction Keystone Pipeline, with his own mother calling him out on it in 2013.[3] By 2016, he decided to refocus on Mexico, where environmentalists were less visible.[4]

Girling serves on the board of directors of Agrium Inc.[5] He is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TC PipeLines GP.[1] He is also the former Chairman of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) and the Natural Gas Council (NGC).[1] Additionally, he formerly served on the board of directors of Bruce Power and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association.[1]

Girling was a member of the 2010 United Way of Calgary and Area Cabinet.[1] In 2008 he was the recipient of the Haskayne School of Business Management Alumni Excellence (MAX) Award.[1] He serves on the board of directors of the Willow Park Charity Golf Classic.[1]
