Saad Lamjarred (Arabic: سعد لمجرد) (born in Rabat, Morocco on April 7, 1985) is a Moroccan singer and occasional actor.
Musical career
Lamjarred was born in 1985 to Bachir Abdou, a Moroccan classical singer, and Nezha Regragui, an actress and comedian.[1] Lamjarred developed an early interest in music at age four and started to sing his father’s songs. He attended the Conservatory of Music in Rabat, where he studied music theory. In 2007, he placed second on Super Star, a widely popular Arabic television show.[2]
In 2011, Lamjarred started his acting career, playing the male lead in Ahlam Nassim, a Moroccan soap opera. He released an album in 2013, entitled Wala Aalik. That same year, he released two more albums, namely Salina and Enty. The title song of the latter, "Enty Baghya Wahad", became one of Lamjarred’s biggest hits and earned him an award at the Méditel Morocco Music Awards 2014.[3][4][5]
Lamjarred was also nominated for the Best Middle East Act at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.[6] He won the Murex d'Or in the category of "Best Arabic Song" for his 2014 song "Enty Baghya Wahad".
YouTube success
Lamjarred's 2015 hit single, "LM3ALLEM" (Arabic: لمعلم), earned Guinness World Record achievement after garnering 100 million views on YouTube within three months of release.[7][8] As of October 2016, the video is the most viewed Arabic video on YouTube and it has garnered more than 400 million views.
His hits "Mal Hbibi Malou" and "Ana Machi Sahel" have garnered 165 million and 78 million views respectively, on YouTube.
Rape allegations
In February 2010 while visiting the US, Saad Lamjarred was accused of beating and raping a woman from Brooklyn, New York. Saad Lamjarred fled the United States after posting bail and risks being arrested if he returns.[9] In May of 2016 Lamjarred was hit with a Brooklyn Supreme court lawsuit in order to open the case from six years ago.[9][10]
Lamjarred was arrested at the Marriott Champs Elysées at the 17th arrondissement of Paris on October 25, 2016 where he will appear before a French prosecutor to face the charges of raping a French woman, Laura Prioul.[9][11] The pop star was scheduled to perform at the Palais des congrès de Paris on October 29, 2016.
After his arrest in Paris, the Brooklyn District Attorney's office has confirmed that they're considering extraditing the artist from Paris for possible trial on the earlier 2010 charges. Rifat Harb, the alleged victim's lawyer, said that his client has settled a civil suit against Lamjarred in June 2016 for an undisclosed amount, adding that she will in no way "obstruct justice" if called to testify against him.[12]
