Sandy Point, Bahamas
Sandy Point is a fast growing community at the tip of southwest Abaco Bahamas. The first indication of its growth is the "Sandy Point Airport" which you’ll see on your arrival by land or private plane. As of yet it is not part of any regular scheduled carrier. Seems others feel this areas potential as there are 3-4 major new developments from planned to completed, which you'll pass in route from Marsh Harbour. There is a brand new police station. The annual "Homecoming and Conch Fest" is this towns major happening. It's held around Bahamian Labour Day the first Friday in June. You can call it an Abaco event, as folks come from all over the island even as far as Coopers Town (100 miles away).
In Sandy Point, is a small settlement with a few shops a couple churches and a couple bonefish lodges. It seems however all streets wind up at a restaurant and bar called Nancy's. It's a friendly fun joint. You'll often see a group of young men and women on the porch having lunch or dinner whom work for Disney.
In the 1990s, Disney bought Gorda Cay, renamed it Castaway Island and made it their pit stop "Island in the Sun" for their cruise ships folks. Most of its employees live in Sandy Point. There is no public access for tourists from shore. Also off shore and a little more to the north, lies the Abaco island that some say time forgot, Moore’s Island. It has two settlements "Hard Bargain" and "The Bight".
Lastly, Hole-in-the-Wall, which is the site of Abaco’s other light house, may seem nearby but should be a trip unto itself and only in a 4-wheel vehicle when coming from Marsh Harbour.
