Managed by Sengkang Health (Abbreviation: SKH), the 1,400-bed Sengkang General and Community Hospital will be one of Singapore’s largest regional hospitals when it is completed. Slated for completion in 2018, the integrated hospital development will serve the growing population in the northeast, in particular Sengkang, Punggol, Hougang and Pasir Ris. Offering general hospital services with community-based care, the hospitals are part of Singapore’s master plan in providing quality and accessible healthcare to all Singaporeans. Every patient coming through the Sengkang General and Community Hospitals will benefit from the expertise offered by SingHealth’s interlinked network of tertiary hospitals, national specialty centres and polyclinics. The Sengkang Health hospitals will also partner primary care physicians, polyclinics and intermediate and long-term care providers to offer more community-based care for the residents of northeast Singapore.

Sengkang Health is part of the SingHealth Academic Medical Centre.[1]

History

Sengkang General and Community Hospitals was first announced by the then-Minister for Health Mr Khaw Boon Wan during the Committee of Supply (COS) speech in 2011.[2] The initial planned date of completion was 2020 but in December 2011, Minister for Health Mr Gan Kim Yong announced that the completion date will be moved forward by 2 years to 2018.[3] Sengkang Health will take over the management of Alexandra Hospital by third quarter of 2015 when JurongHealth starts operating from the new Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.[4]

Key Milestones

Getting the community involved

A key thrust of Sengkang Health is to actively involve the northeast community in building a healthier community together. In 2013, Sengkang Health kick-started an initiative, Millennia Kids Programme, in collaboration with its community partners to encourage young Singaporeans to be ambassadors for healthy living. Under this school-based programme, children learn to eat sensibly, take up sports and avoid bad habits (e.g. smoking). They are also encouraged to influence their families to stay healthy and active together. Sengkang Health is supported by its partners Health Promotion Board, Sport Singapore and the Tobacco Free Generation 2000 Movement on this initiative.
