Shawn Dawson (Hebrew: שון דאוסון; born December 12, 1993) is an Israeli professional basketball player for Maccabi Rishon LeZion of the Israeli Premier League. He is also a member of the Israeli national team.
Early life
Dawson was born in Eilat, Israel. He is the son of Joe Dawson, an American basketball player who played in Israel for more than 20 years.[1] His parents divorced when he was 11, and he lived with his mother in Eilat. He played in Hapoel Eilat youth teams until he was 14, before moving to live with his father and his younger brother, Tyler, in Rehovot. He then joined the Maccabi Rishon LeZion youth team.
Professional career
Maccabi Rishon LeZion
In 2012, Dawson joined the Maccabi Rishon LeZion senior team and made his debut in the Israeli Basketball Premier League during the 2012–13 season.[2] In 24 games as a rookie, he averaged 3.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.[3] In 2013–14, Dawson played in 29 games for Maccabi, averaging 10.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.[3]
Dawson made his break in 2014–15, as he led Maccabi Rishon LeZion to the playoffs and earned All-Israeli League First Team honours, as well as being named the Israeli League Rising Star. In 39 games in 2014–15, he averaged 14.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.[3]
Dawson declared himself eligible for the 2015 NBA draft, but he went undrafted. He went on to help Maccabi Rishon win their first ever championship in 2015–16 after scoring 21 points against Hapoel Jerusalem in the playoffs' final game.[4] In 39 games in 2015–16, he averaged 15.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.[3]
In July 2016, Dawson joined the Washington Wizards for the 2016 NBA Summer League.[5] On August 12, 2016, he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans.[6] However, he was later waived by the Pelicans on October 21 after appearing in three preseason games.[7] Three days later, he returned to Maccabi Rishon LeZion.[8]
