Silver Beach Elementary School is a public school in Bellingham, Washington, and is part of the Bellingham School District. The school serves the Silver Beach and Northshore neighborhoods of Bellingham, including the area surrounding Lake Whatcom. Silver Beach feeds into Kulshan Middle School and Whatcom Middle School.

History

The initial Silver Beach Elementary was nothing more than a log cabin that housed students from 1890 to 1894 before burning down in a forest fire. The next building started hosting students in 1895. In 1911, a new building was erected, out of brick due to concerns about repeated fires. The second Silver Beach building served various purposes after students moved to the new building in 1911, including a retirement home, an apartment building and a children's home. In 1923, this building also burned. In the 1970s an addition was created to the 1911 building in an effort to accommodate the growing neighborhood. The two structures were joined by a covered skybridge. In 1991, a new addition was added to the 1970s portion which also led to the demolition of the hundred-year-old building. The current playground sits where the brick school once stood. As of right now, Silver Beach elementary school serves over 400 students in a building made up of the 1970s and 1990s remodels.[1]
