Sister is an upcoming film directed by Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler (often referred to mononymously as Sia) and starring American child dancer and actress Maddie Ziegler. Its screenplay was co-written by Sia and children's book author Dallas Clayton.
Background and development
Sia Furler announced the film at the Venice Film Festival. She previously worked with Maddie Ziegler in a series of three music videos, "Chandelier", "Elastic Heart", and "Big Girls Cry", all of which Sia co-directed with Daniel Askill.[1][2] Ziegler also danced during several of Sia's live performances to promote her album 1000 Forms of Fear (2014),[2] and was later featured in the music video for "Cheap Thrills", which was also directed by Sia and Askill.[3]
Sia has said that she was "too embarrassed to tell anyone [she] wanted to make a movie, because [she] thought it would be seen as a vanity project, because [she] was a singer".[2] However, after creating the music video for "Chandelier", she decided she was "pretty good" at directing and "felt a little bit braver".[1] The film's screenplay was co-written by Sia and children's book author Dallas Clayton. Sia enjoyed the creative process and noted similarities between directing and writing songs. She said of the process:
For me, the process was basically, I work out the movie. I'll act it out, I'll have the dialogue already in my head... I can't be bothered to learn Final Draft... Like, when I sing, I just want to sing the melody and write the lyrics. I don't want to have to do production, which is very technical. I don't enjoy that.[1][2]
The film is expected to begin filming in 2016.[4]
Description
The film is based on a one-page story Sia wrote in 2007.[1] Sia told the Philippine Daily Inquirer: "It's about a sober drug dealer and his autistic sister."[5]
