Society for Information Display
The Society for Information Display (SID) is an industry organization for displays,[1] generally electronic displays such as televisions and computer monitors. SID was founded in 1962. Its main activities are publishing technical journals and running "Display Week", its main conference, held in May or June each year. SID publications include the Journal of the Society for Information Display, published monthly, the Digest of Technical Papers from SID's annual conference, Information Display magazine, proceedings from other conferences such as the Vehicle Displays and Interfaces Symposium, Asia Display, and International Display Workshops. In addition, local chapters in the Americas, Europe, and throughout Asia have meetings frequently, including lectures by display technologists, and are sometimes offered as webcasts. The SID Board of Directors grants several SID awards based upon outstanding achievements and significant contributions.
Definitions and Standards - ICDM[2]
ICDM is the International Committee for Display Metrology, part of SID’s Definitions and Standards Committee charged with setting standards for display metrology. ICDM is largely focused on the production of the Information Display Measurements Standard, which has about 140 display measurements covering every area of displays. The standard includes nearly every display technology for multiple user types, from display manufacturers to consumers.
Individual Honors and Awards [3]
- Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize: The Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize is awarded for an outstanding technical achievement in, or contribution to, display technology. The award is made by the Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee and carries a stipend of US $2000.
- Jan Rajchman Prize: The Jan Rajchman Prize is awarded for an outstanding scientific or technical achievement in, or contribution to, research on flat panel displays. The award is made by the Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee and carries a stipend of US $2000.
- Otto Schade Prize: The Otto Schade Prize is awarded for an outstanding scientific or technical achievement in, or contribution to, the advancement of functional performance and/or image quality of information displays. The award is made by the Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee and carries a stipend of US $2000.
- Slottow-Owaki Prize: The Slottow–Owaki Prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to the education and training of students and professionals in the field of information display. The award is made by the Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee and carries a stipend of US $2000.

- Frances Rice Darne Memorial Award: The Frances Rice Darne Memorial Award, discontinued in 1987 when it was replaced by the Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize, was awarded periodically to a Society member for an outstanding technical achievement (other than teaching, publication or service) or contribution to the display field. The award was made by the SID Board of Directors. For additional information see (Francis Rice Darne Bio).
- Johann Gutenberg Prize: The Johann Gutenberg Prize was established by SID to honor outstanding technical achievements in, or contributions to, printer technology. The award was made by the Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of the Honors and Awards Committee and carried a stipend of US $2000. Following a transition period that ended in 2007 the Johann Gutenberg Prize has been transferred to the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, which now administers and confers the award.
- Special Recognition Awards: Special recognition awards are presented to members of the technical, scientific and community (not necessarily SID members) for distinguished and valued contributions to the information display field. These awards may be made for contributions in one or more of the following categories,
- Outstanding technical accomplishments
- Outstanding contributions to the literature
- Outstanding service to the Society
- Outstanding entrepreneurial accomplishments
- Outstanding achievements in education
- Presidential Citations: Presidential citations are awarded at each year's Display Week Symposium by SID's President, in recognition of volunteer service contributions to SID over the preceding year.
Best In Show Awards[4]
The Best in Show award is intended to honor the most significant advances in display technology and systems, products, prototypes, and manufacturing processes presented by exhibitors during Display Week. The following factors will be used by the award committee to evaluate the exhibit material:
- Timeliness and significance to the display industry of the products, prototypes, processes, and technologies exhibited
Selection and Presentation
The Display Industry Awards committee of SID will select the 2013 Best in Show award winners based on the self-nomination forms available to all organizations exhibiting during Display Week 2013 and on an onsite review of the nominated exhibits. Final selection will be done at the actual exhibition. Blue Ribbon awards will be presented to the winners at the SID Awards Lunch on Wednesday during Display Week. (The winners will be informed on Tuesday night, prior to the lunch on Wednesday). Winners will be encouraged to mount the blue ribbons in a visible location in their exhibit booths. Engraved bronze plaques will be provided to the three winners after Display Week.
Best Prototype Award[5]
Best Prototype Award are given to the best/most disruptive prototype in the peer-reviewed I-Zone at Display Week.
Display Industry Award[6]
Display Industry Awards are given to the best new display component, display application, and display of the year, industry-wide
Membership Types [7]
- Full membership: Full members have access to all SID content, publications, and receive Information Display magazine by mail.
- Associate Membership: Associate members are those who join SID, but are not involved in the display industry. Associate members receive Information Display magazine but are not eligible to hold office or vote in the general election.
- Student membership: Student members have access to online content, but do not vote in the general election or receive Information Display magazine by mail. Student members must have a student ID, and can be graduate students, but not post docs, lecturers, or professors.
- Shared (discounted) membership: Some countries have lower cost memberships due to foreign exchange rates. These members are able to vote in the general election, but do not receive Information Display magazine by mail.
- Life membership: This membership is available to some long-standing SID members who have retired. They have full access to online content, but do not receive Information Display magazine by mail. Please refer to our bylaws for further information, or contact SID HQ for further information.
- Permanent membership: This individual membership can be purchased at any time, includes Information Display by mail, and lasts for life.
- Unemployed members: This is a discounted membership status available for only one year with no renewal available. This membership class does not receive Information Display magazine by mail.
- Sustaining members: Institutional memberships for companies and universities. Unlike individual memberships, institutional memberships can be transferred from one person to another, for example if an employee is transferred or retires, another employee can use their membership. Institutional memberships for the main billing contact bear the code SUS, and the other free memberships that come with the sustaining membership are membership class SD, or sustaining designee; these codes are displayed for some members in member search.
