St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) is a private university located in Willemstad, Curaçao, in the Caribbean. St. Martinus confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.[1]

History

Originally St. Martinus College,[2] a Catholic girls' school, the university was transformed into its current role as a medical school by a John Daryanani-led group at the request of the local Roman Catholic Church, and established as St. Martinus University on May 22, 2000.[3] In October 2005, Daryanani said the school had half the number of students it needed to break even,[4] and in October 2007, Banco de Caribe announced an auction of the university property. Education of students never halted and the auction never actually manifested.[5] In 2010, SMU came under the administration of Priyamvada Sharma, who currently serves as the university's managing director.[6]

Curriculum

The MD program at St. Martinus University consists of four 20-week semesters of basic sciences that are completed at the university's Curaçao campus, and 72 weeks of clinical clerkships that are completed at affiliated hospitals in the United States.[7][8]

St. Martinus also offers a one year pre-medical program for high school graduates who have not completed the necessary prerequisites for the MD program.[9] Upon successful completion of the pre-med program, students are accepted into the MD program.[10] During interim periods, SMUFOM offers remediation programs as well as an in-house board review program.[11]

As of April 2014, St. Martinus entered a Memorandum of Understanding with CDI College of Ontario. The MOU allows "Canadian students the opportunity to complete a Pre Medical Program recognized by St. Martinus University at the Mississauga location of CDI College." [12]

In September 2015, St. Martinus began offering a concurrent MS in Maharishi AyurVeda and Integrative Medicine and MD in conjunction with Maharishi University of Management.[13]

Accreditation

St. Martinus University was chartered by the Government of the Netherlands Antilles in 2001 and recognized by the Curacao Ministry of Health in 2005.[14][15] St. Martinus University is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and in the AVICENNA Directory for medicine.[16][17]

St. Martinus University is recognized as a designated educational institution by the Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP).[18]

Licensure restrictions

On April 16, 2013, the Medical Council of India listed St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine as an institution whose graduates are ineligible for the Medical Council of India Screening Test.[19] As of July 10, 2013, the Medical Council of India does not require citizens to obtain the Eligibility Certificate to practice in India.[20] After reviewing the case again, Medical Council of India (MCI) approves St. Martinus University, Curacao and recommends removal of the Public Notice dated April 16, 2014 from their website. [21] However it is not yet approved by the Ministry of Health & Welfare Government of India.
