St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Madurai, India, was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1908. It is all boys with grades nine through twelve.[1]
History
Fr. Trincal started a Gurukula in 1863 and planted the seeds of educational mission in Madurai city especially for the Catholic children. After 16 years, it was transformed into a government-recognized primary school in 1879. In 1908 it was upgraded as a high school. During the tenure of Fr. Santhappar, its first headmaster, the state government of Tamil Nadu gave the school permanent recognition in 1908. In 1978 the high school was upgraded to the status of a higher secondary school. At present there are nearly 118 teaching and non-teaching staff and 3,152 students in the school. Britto Hostel attached to the school is a hundred years old and accommodates 350 students.[2]
Activities
The school does well in sports at the District and State levels and participates in the Republic Day Sports meet. It has a showcase football field.[3]
The school's various cultural clubs include Tamil, English, science,[4][5] nature, quiz, film, and art. There is an annual Cultural Week celebration in which student talents are showcased.
Clubs which raise the students' social consciousness include National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, Scouting, Eco Nature clubs, and other movements.[6]

The Superior General of the Society of Jesus in his tour of India spoke to Jesuits and hostel stdents at St. Mary's.[7] A graduate has been appointed judge of the high court of Jammu and Kashmir.[8]
