The Climate Registry
The Climate Registry is a nonprofit collaboration between North American states, provinces, territories, and Native Sovereign Nations to record and track the greenhouse gas emissions of businesses, municipalities and other organisations. The Climate Registry's Board of Directors is made up of 31 states of the USA, 13 provinces/territories of Canada, six states of Mexico, and three Native Sovereign Nations.[1] The data is to be independently verified to ensure accuracy, however participation by organizations is voluntary.[2] Data submitted to the Climate Registry is inputted into the Climate Registry Information System (CRIS), which was developed on EPA's CRAVe-EATS platform.
The Registry, launched on May 8, 2007,[3] is modelled on the California Climate Action Registry, which has been in operation since 2001. It is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.
It will be used to provide data for carbon-reduction initiatives including the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative in the Northeastern United States, the Western Regional Climate Action Initiative, and by individual states.[4]
