Critical reception
The Greasy Strangler received positive reviews from critics to some extent. It has a 64% score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 42 reviews. The site's consensus states: "The Greasy Strangler definitely isn't for everyone, but filmgoers in step with its off-kilter stride are in store for a singular cinematic experience."[5] On Metacritic, the film has a 58 out of 100 rating, based on 13 critics, indicating "Mixed or average reviews".[6]
A review in the British newspaper The Guardian by Wendy Ide rated it zero out of five stars, saying: "Like an early John Waters movie but without the sophistication, this aggressively inane horror comedy manages to cram in every disgusting, deviant activity you couldn't begin to imagine. And yet, it's still rather boring. ... A film with literally no redeeming features."[7]
