Tororo Solar Power Station is a proposed 10 megawatt solar power plant in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community.[1]

Location

The power station is located in Tororo District, outside of the town of Tororo in the Eastern Region of Uganda, approximately 211 kilometres (131 mi) by road east of Kampala, the country's capital and largest city.[2]

Overview

The power station will have a capacity of 10 megawatts to be sold directly to the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited for integration in the national electricity grid. The power will be evacuated via a substation near the station. The energy generated will power approximately 40,000 homes, located near the power station, thus minimizing transmission losses.[3]

Developers

The power station is being developed by a consortium of Simba Telecoms Limited, a Ugandan telecommunications firm belonging to the Simba Group owned by Patrick Bitature, and Building Energy SpA, an Italian energy infrastructure company.[3][4][5] The Simba Group also owns Electromaxx Limited, the owner-operator of the 70 megawatt Tororo Thermal Power Station, commissioned in 2010.[6]

Construction timeline, costs and funding

The budgeted construction costs are US$15.5 million.[7] The project will receive partial funding from the European Union Infrastructure Trust Fund through KfW.[8] It was anticipated that the power station would be fully operational by December 2015.[1][5]
