Waseem Akhtar (Urdu: وسیم اختر) (born: November 25, 1955) is a Pakistani politician of Muttahida Qaumi Movement who is current Mayor of Karachi.
Education and Politics
After his early academic education he finished his degree program in Telecommunication Engineering. At the initial establishment of MQM, he joined the party in 1988, at this moment he has been working under the group of local Govt. planned for 2 years and have now earned a high up knowledge in political field under the banner of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).[1]
Mayor of Karachi
Waseem Akhtar became Mayor of Karachi on August 24, 2016.[2]
Personal life
He is the son of Akhter Muhammad Khan. As a main source of income, he runs a business of Real Estate. He is married and has six children.
Controversy
Waseem Akhtar has been arrested based on unlawful and illegal JIT report of Dr Asim[3][4] which according to legal experts are inadmissible in courts[5] by the Anti-terror court which has also been declared as 'unjust and ineffective by the 'International Commission of Jurists.[6][7]
Waseem Akhter was shortly arrested after his nomination papers were accepted by Election Commission of Pakistan (which can only be possible if there is no criminal record) and contested Local Government Elections of Karachi and got nominated as Mayor of Karachi. Since he was nominated mayor of Karachi, unknown persons registered FIR against him all in the District of Malir alone, notorious for SSP Rao Anwar (who has since been suspended for his suspicious activities[8]) and Anti-Terror Court ordered his arrest which seems part of chain of political crackdown against MQM which has blamed the Law enforcement agencies for transgressing their authorities and extra judicially killing many MQM workers including Aftab Ahmed, ex cordinator of Farooq Sattar.[9]
Charges against listening speeches and clapping
Charges against Waseem Akhtar include listening speeches of Altaf Hussain and clapping on his speeches.[10] he is also accused of recommending people to Dr. Asim for medical treatment.
Fake Confession reports
Pakistani media ran reports of Waseem Akhtar confessing murdering people on 12 May 2007, but his lawyers presented signed letter from his jail declaring the reports to be false fabrication and completely rejecting false confession reports.[11] Waseem Akhtar later himself appeared on the media and rejects fake confession reports. He was handed over to notorious mafia head and fake encounter specialist SSP Rao Anwar[12][13] for interrogation who was later suspended by the Government of Sindh.
MQM has also alleged that Law enforcement agencies were pressurizing it to withdraw Waseem Akhtar as the mayor of Karachi.[14] Many Analysts opine that Waseem Akhtar is not being provided a fair trial.[15]
Fake Receipts in Dr Asim Case submitted by Rangers
prominent journalist and media anchor Shahzaib Khanzada of Geo news made shocking revelations that Rangers has submitted forged and fake medical receipts of alleged terrorists who were recommended for treatment by Waseem Akhtar. All medical bills and receipts of 'terrorists' named by rangers belong to innocent residents (receipts and addresses are authentic but names have been changed) who have been dead long time ago. The residents of the given address verify the authenticity of the medical reports but their medical reports are forged with a new name.[16]
Amnesty International
Amnesty international has also published its report stating life of Waseem Akhtar while in detention maybe in danger because of torture and ill treatment by the law enforcement agencies[17]
Pakistani Analysts hint Military ploy to dismantle MQM
It is to be noted that many Pakistani analysts have pointed establishment's ploy to eliminate MQM from Karachi and Pakistan.[18][19]
Waseem Akhtar also alleges that ATC needlessly delaying his bail by not hearing his bail case.
Released from jail
Waseem Akhtar has been released from detention on November 16, 2016 after getting bail on all 39 cases[20]
