William Tait was an English professional association footballer who played as an inside forward. He played five matches in the Football League for Burnley before moving into Non-League football.
He scored the first ever hat-trick in League football when he put three past Bolton Wanderers at Pike's Lane on 15 September 1888. Burnley won the game 4–3.
