In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy roleplaying game, the winter wolf is a magical beast which lives in cold forests and plains.

Creative origins

The winter wolf is likely to be based upon the Arctic wolf, and elements of norse mythology.

Publication history

The winter wolf appeared in first edition in the original Monster Manual (1977).[1]

The winter wolf appeared in second edition in the Monstrous Compendium Volume One (1989),[2] and reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993).[3] The winter wolf appeared in the third edition Monster Manual (2000),[4] and in the 3.5 revised Monster Manual (2003). The winter wolf appeared in fourth edition in Monster Manual 2 (2009).


Description

A winter wolf resembles a normal wolf, only with white or another pale color fur. Despite being large (8 feet long and 4 and a half feet tall), it is somewhat more slender than other wolves.

The winter wolves habits are similar to those of a normal wolf. It will hunt either by itself or in packs. Winter wolves also an excellent sense of smell, are capable of stealth, and are prized for their fur. It is distinguishable from other wolves by its breath weapon; it can breathe frost.

Winter wolves can speak Giant and Common.

They are regarded as neutral evil in alignment.
