Ex-Girlfriend is an all-female R&B quartet formed by New Jack Swing Group Full Force. They were signed to Reprise Records, who released two albums by the group in the 1990s. They split up in 1994 and reformed in 2008.
Group history
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the group comprised Stacy Francis, Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, and Tisha Hunter, who all adopted the surname 'X' as part of a group concept of "female militarism".[1][2] They were signed via Full Force's Forceful Records to Reprise Records and released two studio albums (X Marks the Spot and It's a Woman Thang) before disbanding in 1994.[1]
In 1989 they performed background vocals for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam on the song "Just Git It Together" and in 1990, they sang on Jasmine Guy's debut single "Try Me". In 1991 they released "Why Can't You Come Home", the first single from their debut album. The single went on to become a Top 5 hit on the Billboard R&B chart and peaked at no. 90 on the Hot 100 singles chart. The second single released from their debut album was titled "You (You're The One For Me)", followed by the radio singles "With All My Heart" and "What I Would Do To You". They also contributed background vocals to Cheryl Pepsii Riley's hit 1991 single "Ain't No Way".[1] After a three-year hiatus, Ex-Girlfriend returned in 1994 with the single "X In Your Sex", from their second album.[2] The album was regarded by critics as an improvement on their debut,[3][4] but had little to no commercial success. The group disbanded in the same year.
As of July 2008 the members of Ex-Girlfriend decided to reunite.
In May 2016, Julia Robertson released a duet with singer-songwriter Norm Adams entitled "Body Rush".
