After graduating from college in Detroit, he comes back home to Hasetsu in Kyushu after being away for five years. Yuri visits his childhood friend, Yuko, at an ice rink known as "Ice Castle Hasetsu" and perfectly mimics an advanced skating routine performed by his idol and famous Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov. When secretly recorded footage of Yuri's performance is uploaded to the internet, it catches the attention of Victor, who decides to suddenly travel to Kyushu to become Yuri's coach. Together with Victor, Yuri aims to win the Grand Prix series as he battles against his rival, Yuri Plisetsky, a 15 year-old rising star skater from Russia.

As stated by his teacher Minako, Yuri is not a prodigy at skating, but his skills were honed by rigorous training, which also grants him good stamina. One year prior to the start of the series, he was Japan's top figure skater and his greatest skating assets being his peculiar sense of rhythm and unique step. However, Yuri succumbs to pressure easily, causing him to mess up at crucial moments. After he failed his first Grand Prix Final, his self-confidence was greatly affected and he became depressed due to his shortcomings and performances in following competitions, leaving a black mark on his career.
While Yuri is kind, sensitive, and mild-mannered, he is introverted and has a hard time opening himself up to others, preferring to be alone and practice ballet or ice skating than socializing with his peers. Despite having a lot of support from his family and friends, he greatly lacks self-esteem and is easily discouraged, causing bouts of anxiety. Contrary to how Yuri sees himself due to his past failures, he is still considered Japan's best skater, having the loyal support of his fans and the juniors skaters that looks up to him, much to his bewilderment. Under Victor's tutelage, Yuri slowly becomes more self-assured and confident, aiming to reinvent himself and putting more input into his programs as he strives to win the Grand Prix series.

One week later, Yuri P. arrives and finds Victor and Yuri K. at the Ice Castle and demands that Victor return to Russia to honor his promise. In order to choose who Victor will coach, he makes both Yuris compete for him in a skate-off, which becomes a big public event. For one week, Viktor and both Yuris train, with Yuri P. revealing to Yuri K. that Victor has lost inspiration to invent new routines that can "surprise people". Meanwhile, Victor learns more about Yuri K.'s introverted nature from his teacher and friends. Later, Victor assigns them two arrangements of the same song on the theme on love - one arrangement for Agape and the other for Eros - matching them oppositely to the Yuris' personalities and preferences. However, both Yuris struggle to grasp and integrate the feelings of Agape and Eros into their performances, with Yuri P. being too focused on the physical aspect of the performance than the emotional, and Yuri K. not knowing how to channel his Eros at all. Later, Yuri P. remembers his grandfather and uses thoughts of him to fuel his Agape program, as Yuri K. attempts to use his favorite food, katsudon, to channel Eros. Victor lets the Yuris pick from his own wardrobe of costumes to wear for their programs and Yuri K. picks a costume with an androgynous design. At the last minute, inspired by the costume's concept, Yuri K. goes to his ballet teacher Minako to learn how to be more feminine to perform his Eros program, feeling it suits him better than a masculine role. On the day of event, Yuri P. goes first and performs flawlessly in the physical aspect yet becomes too emotionally flustered to correctly convey Agape midway into the program. During Yuri K.'s turn, he performs more confidently as he was fully able to grasp Eros in his program, though he wasn't able to cleanly land one of his jumps. In the end, a downtrodden Yuri P. leaves for Russia before the results are announced, as Yuri K. is declared the winner. Both Yuris vow to win the upcoming Grand Prix series.

Yuri P. accepts Lilia's help due to his desire to win and to take advantage of his abilities before his body matures and puts a damper on his abilities. Meanwhile, Victor puts Yuri K. in charge of picking his own free program music; however, Yuri K. struggles as he doesn't trust himself to make the right decision. Later, Yuri K. calls his friend and fellow figure skater, Phichit Chulanont, to get him into contact with a girl who composed an original music piece for him once (though he didn't use it) and ask her to redo it for him. Feeling ashamed about his shortcomings as a skater, Yuri K. avoids Victor for an entire day, but eventually admits to him how he doesn't like to appear "weak" in front of others. 8 "Yuri vs Yuri! The Horror!! Rostelecom Cup, Short Program"
"Yūri VS Yūri! Oso Roshia!! Roshia taikai shōto puroguramu" (勇利VSユーリ!おそロシア!!ロシア大会 ショートプログラム)
Matsuo AsamiNovember 23, 2016[24]
With the Grand Prix events nearly done, Christophe and Kazakhstan skater Otabek Altin are the only skaters that have qualified for the GPF so far. In Moscow, the Rostelecom Cup event will determine the last four spots among the six skaters left in the competition, with Yuri K. needing to rank fourth place or higher to qualify. The results will also determine if Phichit will be able to advance to the final or not. In the short program, Yuri K. skates flawlessly. During Yuri P.'s turn, he performs well, but messes up his first jump as he was bothered by his grandfather's absence and still being bitter about Victor being Yuri K.'s coach. In the end, Yuri K. places second and Yuri P. places third in the short program. As the day wraps up, Yuri K. gets a call from his sister that Victor's poodle, Makkachin, got buns stuck in his throat. Hearing that Makkachin is in critical condition, Yuri K. remembers how he couldn't be there when his own dog died and urges Victor to return to Japan alone to be with Makkachin. Reluctant to leave Yuri K. alone for the free program tomorrow, Victor asks Yakov to be Yuri K.'s coach in his absence, much to everyone's surprise.

With Yakov agreeing to watch over Yuri K., Victor returns to Japan to be with Makkachin. Before his free program begins, Yuri P. receives some pork cutlet-filled pirozhki from his grandfather. With his grandfather's presence giving him strength, Yuri P. changes his jump difficulty in order to get a higher score than Yuri K. and Canadian skater Jean-Jacques "JJ" Leroy. After a perfect performance, Yuri P. has qualify for the GPF and won second place overall. Without Victor's presence, an anxious Yuri K. fumbles a few times in his routine, but receives enough points to place third in the free program and earns fourth place in the competition, allowing him to qualify for the GPF alongside the other five skaters (Christophe, JJ, Otabek, Yuri P., and Phichit). After the competition, Yuri K. contemplates retiring from skating after the GPF, regardless if he wins the gold or not, and have Victor step down as his coach. Finally getting past his grudge against Yuri K., Yuri P. finds him and gives him some of his grandfather's pork cutlet-filled pirozhki as an early birthday present. Returning home to Japan, Yuri K. shares a heartfelt reunion with Victor, with Makkachin being alive and well, and reaffirms their goal to win the GPF together.
