Zamir Jafri (Urdu: ضمیر جعفری) (January 1, 1918 – May 12, 1999) was a Pakistani poet best known for his Urdu humorous poetry.
Life
Jafri was born at Chak Abdul Khaliq, Jhelum. After graduating from Islamia College, LahorePunjab University, he joined the army’s public relation department during World War II and retired as a major. One of his sons is a retired Maj. Gen. Syed Ehtisham Zamir who served in the Inter Services Intelligence Directorate While his younger son, former cricketer Syed Imtanan Zamir lives in the U.S. His grandson Muhammad jafri lives in Karachi, Studying MBA at Iqra University (Gulshan Campas). He published more than 50 books in Urdu. He also wrote humorous columns in newspapers and periodicals.
He gradually embarked on a mission to work for the people of Pakistan, and began reaching out to these people from all spheres of life - devoting his time to carry on social work so as to create harmony and well-being in the society. Now his son Gen Syed Ehtasham Zamir and his grandson Syed Ali Ehtasham (journalist/entrepreneur) are determined to continue and carry out the legacy he left behind. They are operating a non-profit foundation, the Syed Zamir Jafri Foundation, which provides health services, educational means and awareness, legal aid, development of the literary institution and other miscelaneous structures to strengthen the underprivileged communities of Pakistan and also Mata-e-Zamir an archive of his books and contributions. He graduated from Islamia College, Lahore.
"Pakistan's renowned Urdu poet Syed Zamir Jafri passed away at a hospital in New York on Wednesday at 6.30pm after a protracted illness. Syed Ghazanfar Mehdi, President of Daira, a local literary organisation, received information about the death of Syed Zamir Jafri from his friends in New York and London, and described the great poet a legend in his life time."
