Śląsk Wrocław is a Polish basketball team, based in Wrocław, playing in Tauron Basket Liga. The home court is Hala Orbita, Hala Stulecia and Hala Kosynierka. On October 11, 2008, the club has gone bankrupt and was withdrawn from the Polish Basketball League but is currently playing again in the Polish PLK.
History
Since being founded in 1947 Śląsk Wrocław has been the best and most recognizable Polish basketball club. The team has won the Polish league championships 17 times so far. Most recognized period of Śląsk's history is the "Great Śląsk Era" when the team won five championship titles in a row (1998-2002). Most of those successes where achieved with Andrej Urlep, the almost legendary coach of Śląsk. Recently, Śląsk is encountering major financial problems which caused lack of decent results in the last 3 years. Before the 2006-07 season, the club has appointed Urlep again which is believed to be the first step towards regaining the top place in polish basketball. The famous players of Śląsk Wrocław were: Mieczysław Łopatka (1960s), Edward Jurkiewicz (1970s and 1980s), Jerzy Binkowski (1980s, 1990s), Dariusz Zelig (1980s, 1990s), Adam Wójcik, Maciej Zielinski (retired at the end of season 2005-06) and Dominik Tomczyk. In 2008 the club has gone into big financial difficulties, which resulted in withdrawing the team from Polish Basketball League. In the 2015–16 season, they returned to European competition by playing in the FIBA Europe Cup.
