The 1986-87 Argentine Primera B Nacional was the 1º season of the newly created second division professional of football in Argentina. This was the result of new changes in the entire Argentine football league system, the Metropolitano and Nacional of Primera División disappeared and the previous second division, the Primera B Metropolitana transformed into the third division. To create this tournament was played the Apertura 1986 of Primera B Metropolitana of which 7 teams were promoted to this new division. Also from the Torneo del Interior were promoted 13 teams and from Primera División were relegated 2 teams. A total of 22 teams competed; the champion and runner-up were promoted to Argentine Primera División.

The Second Promotion Playoff or Torneo Reducido was played by the teams placed 2º to 9º in the overall standings: Banfield (2º), Belgrano (3º), Huracán (4º), Colón (5º), Deportivo Maipú (6º), Deportivo Mandiyú (7º), Chaco For Ever (8º) and Lanús (9º). The winner was promoted to Primera División.
