S.S. Lazio fell back one step from its 1994-95 season, but still managed to finish third in the Serie A, with Giuseppe Signori clinching his third top-scoring title. However, half of his 24 goals came from the penalty spot, somewhat devaluing his achievement. Pierluigi Casiraghi was able to score 14 goals, despite taking one solitary penalty, and their striking partnership saved Lazio when the defensive line sometimes failed to stand up to their task. Despite the many goals conceded, the season saw the breakthrough of Alessandro Nesta, who was to become defensive general for years to come.
