The 1996 NHK Trophy was the eighteenth NHK Trophy competition held and part of the 1996–97 figure skating season. It was the fifth event of six of the 1996–97 Champions Series, a series of senior elite competitions that was later renamed the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. This was the second year of that series. The NHK Trophy is an international, senior-level figure skating competition. Elite figure skaters compete in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.
In 1996, the NHK Trophy was held in Osaka, Japan from December 5 through 8. Skaters who placed high enough in this competition earned points towards competing in the 1996–97 Champions Series Final.
Competition notes
- Midori Ito was expected to compete, but withdrew before the competition when she retired from competitive figure skating and just skated in the Exhibition.[1]
